Do You Have BPD?!

2024/8/30 Edited to

... Read moreWhen I first started to understand my Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), one of the most painful feelings was believing I was truly alone and misunderstood, a sentiment I know many others with BPD share. It's a heavy burden, carrying emotions that feel too intense for anyone else to grasp. For a long time, I didn't even realize some of my experiences were directly linked to BPD, especially what's often referred to as 'quiet BPD.' Quiet BPD often means internalizing many of the symptoms that others might express outwardly. Instead of fast outbursts of anger, I'd often turn that anger inward, leading to intense self-criticism or a sudden, overwhelming wave of shame. My extreme mood swings weren't always visible to others, but they were a rollercoaster inside my head, making me feel very sensitive to every little comment or perceived slight. It was like I was constantly bracing myself, expecting everyone to turn on me one day, which fueled a deep sense of insecurity. One of the most peculiar and often unsettling experiences for me was the 'BPD gaze,' sometimes accompanied by derealization. It's a feeling where you might find yourself intensely staring at something or someone, almost as if you're trying to understand them on a deeper, almost unsettling level, or conversely, feeling like you're observing yourself from outside your own body. This intense gaze, coupled with derealization, made me feel even more disconnected and alien, adding to the feeling of being alone in the world, with things I didn't know were caused by my BPD. Another aspect I struggled to understand was experiencing limerence instead of love. My intense feelings for others would often swing between idealization and devaluation, making genuine, stable connection incredibly difficult. I also found myself flirting without realizing it, not intending to, but perhaps seeking validation or connection in a way that sometimes led to misunderstandings. The journey of recognizing these quiet BPD symptoms and understanding that I wasn't the only one feeling this way has been profoundly healing. It's about acknowledging that while these experiences are challenging, they are part of a recognized condition, and there are ways to manage them. Finding a community and resources that truly get what it's like to navigate these internal battles has been a game-changer. You are strong, and you are not alone in this.
