Goodbye Moonface

Moon face, also known as moon facies, is a medical sign that causes a person's face to appear round and puffy due to a buildup of fluid or fat deposits. The effects are most noticeable around the cheeks and chin.

I had started a medication called Seroquel/quetiapine. It’s an antipsychotic that was supposed to help my severe anxiety. It did help get me out of a rough place and I’m very grateful for it because it put me back on the road I needed to be on mentally. But it did take a tole on my physical health. I gained about 20 pounds and was always bloated. I tried everything to lose weight. I eventually found that cardio/running and supplements helped me a lot. Especially vitamin D and taurine. But I still was bloated a lot and still had moonface.

What ultimately made me go back to normal was realizing that it was the medication that was causing these symptoms and getting off of it.

I am sharing this to show others that our body gives us signs when something is not right. The medication I was on messed with my hormones in a way that my body really didn’t like.

Pay attention to the signs your body is giving you. Bloating, puffiness and inflammation isn’t normal.

Doctors will often tell you that you are fine and your labs are normal but if you can tell something is off don’t give up. Be your own advocate because the only person who knows how you feel is you.

So, if you're asking 'how to reduce moon face' or looking for the 'fastest way to get rid of moon face,' let me share some things I learned and what others often find helpful. Beyond identifying and addressing the root cause (which was my ultimate fix!), lifestyle changes played a huge role in managing my bloating and overall well-being. Here are some actionable steps that might help you too: Hydration is Key: It sounds counterintuitive for fluid retention, but drinking plenty of water helps your body flush out excess sodium and toxins, reducing that 'inflamed' look. Aim for pure water, not sugary drinks! Sodium Smart Choices: Processed foods are often packed with sodium, which is a major culprit for bloating and can make your 'moon face swelling' worse. Try to stick to whole, fresh foods. Anti-inflammatory Diet: Foods rich in anti-inflammatory properties, like fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids, can help combat the inflammation that contributes to a puffy face. Think berries, leafy greens, and fatty fish. Regular Movement: Just like I found with cardio/running, regular exercise boosts circulation and helps reduce fluid retention throughout your body, including your face. Even a brisk walk daily can make a difference. Prioritize Sleep: Lack of sleep can mess with your hormones and lead to increased inflammation and water retention. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to help your body recover and de-puff. Stress Management: High stress levels trigger cortisol, a hormone that can contribute to weight gain and fluid retention. Incorporate relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing into your routine. Consult a Professional: While being your own advocate is crucial, always discuss persistent symptoms with a doctor. They can help identify underlying causes like PCOS or medication side effects and guide you on the safest way to manage them. Remember, seeing those 'before and after' pictures truly motivated me, and I hope by sharing my experience and these tips, you too can find your path to feeling less bloated and saying goodbye to that 'moon face' feeling. Your body is always sending you signals – listen closely and empower yourself to find the solutions that work for you!
