Handwriting Progress

When I was in highschool, I journaled all the time, but as I got older I lost the habit. Last year I really tried to get back into it, but only did a few entries. This year, however, I've really made an effort and have started enjoying it just as much as I used to!

One side effect of not writing everyday, was that my handwriting got noticeably worse. I really didn't like that since I used to have pretty handwriting. This wasn't my reason for journaling again, but recently I've noticed a huge difference. I looked at older entries and noticed just how much my handwriting has changed in the past year. I thought it was pretty cool, and a fun little cherry on top to my journaling!

So, because of this, I wanted to show my progress pictures on here! I still don't have beautiful handwriting, I know that, but it's so much better than it was before. And that makes me really happy!

... Read moreSince sharing my handwriting progress, I've had a few questions about how I actually improved, especially for those looking for neater or more consistent writing. It's totally understandable! When I first started journaling again, my cursive felt rusty, almost like I was learning from scratch. I remember struggling with words like 'chocolate' (funny, right? It even showed up in my early entries!) and just wanting my letters to look more uniform, like the 'Arianna in cursive' examples you sometimes see online. One common question I get is about daily practice and templates, especially if you're into hard-tipped calligraphy. While the main article focuses on my journaling journey, I've learned that consistent effort, even without formal templates, makes a huge difference. Think of journaling as your personal, informal practice ground! However, if you're aiming for specific calligraphy styles or just want to quickly improve certain aspects, using templates for a few minutes each day can definitely accelerate your progress. It helps build muscle memory for those tricky strokes. Beyond just writing often, a few little things really helped me achieve that 'consistent handwriting' and 'neat writing' I was craving. First, focus on your grip. A relaxed but firm grip prevents hand fatigue and allows for smoother strokes. Experiment with different pens – what feels comfortable to one person might not to another. I found that a pen that glides easily without too much pressure helped me achieve a more fluid look. Another tip for 'neat handwriting' is to slow down. It sounds obvious, but when we're rushing, our letters tend to become sloppy. Pay attention to the baseline, the height of your letters, and the spacing between words. Consistency in these elements is key to a visually pleasing script. I also noticed that simply using lined paper consistently helped me maintain better alignment compared to blank pages. For those specific words like 'chocolate' or names in cursive, try breaking them down. Practice individual letters, then connect them slowly. You'll find that with practice, those connections become second nature. Don't be afraid to try different styles until you find one that feels natural and looks good to you. It's all about personal expression! Finally, to 'bring pictures' of your own progress, just like I did, make sure you take photos in good, consistent lighting. Try to use the same type of paper and pen each time for a fair comparison. Date your entries clearly so you can easily track your journey from January to September (or whenever you started!). Seeing those visual improvements is incredibly motivating and proves that yes, you can improve your handwriting, even in the computer age!
