What version of your parents do you need to grieve

What version of your parents do you need to grieve?

because you can love your parents and still mourn what they couldn’t give you.

you can understand why they were the way they were and still admit it hurt.

you can be healing and still wish someone had protected the younger version of you sooner.

so today, i’m letting myself grieve without guilt.

not because i want to stay in the past,

but because the part of me that needed more still deserves to be heard. 🌊

... Read moreGrieving the version of our parents that we needed but never met is a profound and personal journey. Many people find themselves holding onto the pain of what was missing in their upbringing, even while appreciating their parents' efforts or understanding their limitations. In my experience, allowing yourself to grieve this 'unmet parent' is not about blaming or resenting but about acknowledging that deeper emotional needs were unmet. It’s a healing practice to recognize that you can love your parents and still admit that you wished for more protection, guidance, or emotional support when you were younger. I remember realizing that the younger version of me deserved a voice — one that could express the longing for comfort or safety. This acceptance helped me stop feeling guilty about my feelings. Instead of suppressing my grief, I allowed it to flow, understanding that this was a crucial step in my resilience and growth. It's important to understand that grieving doesn’t mean staying stuck in the past. It means honoring those feelings so you can move forward with compassion for yourself and your parents. By holding space for this grief without judgment, you build a foundation for healthier relationships and personal development. If you find yourself on this path, consider journaling about your feelings, seeking therapy, or engaging in support groups. Hearing the unmet needs inside doesn't weaken you; it empowers you to become whole. Remember the gentle permission to grieve the version of your parents you needed but never met — it can open the door to profound healing and transformation.
