Low Porosity Hair Doesn't Need Protein

2025/5/28 Edited to

... Read moreFrom my experience with low porosity hair, understanding when and how to use protein treatments is vital. Although many believe low porosity hair should avoid protein, I learned that it's not about avoiding protein entirely but about moderation. Low porosity hair tends to resist moisture due to its tightly closed cuticles, which can lead to moisture overload or hygral fatigue if over-conditioned or over-proteinized. I discovered that using protein treatments occasionally helps strengthen my hair without causing stiffness or brittleness. It's important to choose lightweight proteins that can penetrate the hair strand without causing buildup. Additionally, I combine protein treatments with moisturizing products free of heavy proteins to maintain hydration without overloading my hair. Another tip is paying attention to your hair’s response. If your hair feels dry or breaks easily, it might need protein. If it feels stiff or snaps, it likely needs moisture instead. Using products designed for low porosity curls, which balance moisture and protein, has made a huge difference in my hair's health and manageability. In summary, low porosity hair doesn’t need protein as often as other hair types, but it should not be neglected. The key is to balance protein and moisture carefully to avoid damage and promote strong, vibrant curls.
