🤑How do you budget? On paper or through an app?

We have always budgeted on paper since we have had our house. I’m wondering how everyone else does their budget. 🤔

Do you use a specific app? I need recommendations on what to use. Right now I have rocket money but that doesn’t seem to help me too much.

... Read moreBudgeting is a core skill that helps many of us keep our finances on track. Whether you’ve been budgeting on paper like many do or are considering switching to an app, it’s important to understand the advantages each method offers. Using paper to budget can be very effective for people who prefer a tactile experience and enjoy manually tracking expenses. Writing down your budget can increase your awareness of spending habits and help you internalize your financial goals better. This method also allows for great flexibility in how you organize and categorize your finances. However, it can be time-consuming and prone to errors without automation. On the other hand, budgeting apps are designed to automate many aspects of budgeting such as expense tracking, bill reminders, and visualizing spending patterns. Popular choices include Mint, YNAB (You Need A Budget), PocketGuard, and every app has its unique features. For example, YNAB emphasizes zero-based budgeting and goal-setting, while Mint aggregates accounts to give a comprehensive financial snapshot. You mentioned currently using Rocket Money but feeling it doesn’t help much. Some users find Rocket Money's subscription monitoring and automatic saving features useful but may prefer apps with more detailed budgeting categories or educational resources. When choosing an app, consider what features matter most to you: do you want simple expense tracking, bill management, debt payoff tools, or investment tracking? It’s also beneficial to combine methods. For instance, starting with paper to understand your cash flow and then transitioning to an app to automate and refine your budget can be a practical approach. Whichever method you pick, consistency and regular review are key to successful budgeting. Finally, be sure to explore budgeting communities, such as #moneyhabits and #moneyhacks, to get real user insights and tips. Real-life experiences often reveal practical solutions you won’t find in app descriptions. Ultimately, how you budget depends on your personal preferences, discipline, and lifestyle. Trying different methods and apps can help you discover the best approach that keeps your financial plans on track and reduces money stress.

I’ve always budgeted on a spreadsheet- but that hasn’t really been doing it for me. This year my goal is to build a “sinking fund” and I think it’s time to start budgeting on an app - but not sure which is the best app.
