Between her lips and lies … part 6
Domo looked at Lashae for a second, caught off guard by how calm she sounded. That calmness always meant she already knew more than she was letting on. The breeze rolled across the bridge while cars moved underneath them, headlights streaking through the dark.
“Keeping her from you is crazy,” Domo replied, folding her arms. “Ida just my friend. We grew up together.”
Lashae smirked faintly, but there was tension sitting behind it.
“And Keira was just your ex, right?” she asked. “See how that sound?”
Domo exhaled hard through her nose. “You dragging it now.”
“No,” Lashae answered quickly. “I’m paying attention now.”
That line sat heavy between them.
Domo glanced away toward the water before looking back at her. “You acting like I hid shawty on purpose.”
“You did,” Lashae said. “You tell me everybody else business. Every person you don’t care about, I know. But somebody you been cool with since grade school? Never heard her name till now.”
Domo’s jaw tightened because there wasn’t really a clean response to that.
Lashae stepped a little closer, lowering her voice.
“You asking me how I know about Ida,” she said. “The real question is why everybody around you know who I am… but I’m the last one finding out who they are.”
Domo looked at her differently after that.
Not angry.
Just realizing Lashae wasn’t insecure like Keira used to be. Lashae noticed patterns. She listened. And once something felt off to her, she stayed on it until it made sense.
“Nothing going on with Ida,” Domo finally said. “But maybe I should’ve mentioned her.”
“Maybe,” Lashae replied softly. “Because it’s not always cheating that make somebody feel played. Sometimes it’s secrecy.”
The bridge grew quiet again.
And for the first time that night, Domo started wondering who told Lashae about Ida in the first place.
Domo stared at Lashae for a second after the question landed. The joking look faded off her face almost immediately when she realized Lashae was dead serious.
The wind pushed against Lashae’s blonde hair while she stood there waiting, arms folded tightly across her chest.
“Why you getting aggressive?” Domo muttered.
“Because you playing in my face,” Lashae snapped back. “You laughing and dancing around the question instead of answering it.”
Domo rubbed the back of her neck before finally speaking.
“Years ago,” she admitted. “Before you.”
Lashae blinked slowly.
“Oh, aight.”
That response was too calm. Domo knew it instantly.
“It wasn’t serious,” Domo added quickly. “We was young—”
“But you said no.”
Domo opened her mouth, then shut it again.
“That’s the problem,” Lashae continued. “You looked me in my face and lied first. Then told the truth after.”
Domo stepped closer. “I ain’t think it mattered.”
“It matters because you made it not matter,” Lashae shot back. “If Ida was just a friend, you could’ve said that from jump. Instead you acting weird, hiding her name, then lying about sleeping with her.”
Domo’s patience started thinning. “Bro, you acting like I cheated on you.”
“And you acting like trust only matters when cheating involved.”
That hit harder than Domo expected.
Lashae shook her head and started walking again, faster this time.
“You know what be crazy?” she said without looking at her. “Women always wanna say somebody insecure when really we just noticing the little lies.”
“Ain’t nobody calling you insecure.”
“You don’t gotta say it. I can feel it.”
Domo caught up to her, grabbing lightly at her wrist before Lashae pulled away.
“Lashae, listen to me.”
“No, you listen,” Lashae replied, finally turning around again. “I don’t care that you slept with her before me. I care that you tried to clean it up instead of just being honest. That makes me question what else you make sound small.”
The silence between them felt heavier now.
Not breakup heavy.
But close enough for Domo to finally understand Lashae wasn’t threatening to leave just to sound tough. She meant every word she said.
