StrengthSpan Wisdom
Leg strength is not just about movement.
It reflects how well the system can produce force when needed.
Lower body strength is strongly associated with survival because it involves multiple systems working together:
the nervous system, muscle activation, coordination, and balance.
Strength is not only about how much muscle is present.
It depends on how effectively the brain can recruit that muscle.
With aging, this process changes.
Motor units are lost.
Fewer muscle fibers are activated.
And the speed of force production begins to decline.
This affects everyday actions:
standing up, climbing stairs, or reacting to a loss of balance.
These are not just movements.
They are responses.
When the system cannot respond quickly or effectively,
the range of possible actions narrows.
This is why strength reflects more than physical capacity.
It reflects adaptability.
Strength is not stored.
It is maintained through use and demand.
And when that demand decreases,
the system adjusts accordingly.
