StrengthSpan

Strength is not about lifting heavy.

It’s about sending the body a message:

“You are still needed.”

Muscles shrink when signals disappear.

Posture softens when engagement fades.

Movement narrows when avoidance becomes the habit.

That’s not failure.

That’s adaptation.

The body responds to demand, not age.

And here’s where mindset enters:

The words we attach to effort (“I’m too old,” “I can’t,” “What’s the point?”) quietly reduce the signals even more.

But small, repeated use — physical and mental — tells the nervous system to keep investing in you.

This idea sits at the heart of Not Done Yet: aging isn’t a shutdown. It’s a negotiation with the signals we keep sending.

... Read moreFrom my own experience, I've come to realize that strength truly isn’t about the amount of weight you can lift; it’s about maintaining consistent engagement with your body. The idea that muscles shrink due to signal loss rather than just aging reshaped how I approach my daily routines. For example, tasks that once felt simple can become challengingly harder, but instead of telling myself "I'm too old" or "I can’t," I started writing down what I tell myself when things get tough. This self-talk makes a significant difference—it either diminishes effort or propels me forward. I also found that small actions, like choosing to do a single squat or a walk every day, send strong signals to my nervous system that I'm still actively using my body. It reminds me that my identity isn’t fixed; I’m still evolving. I use prompts similar to those suggested, such as finishing the sentence, "I am not done becoming someone who...", which keeps my mindset open and growth-oriented. Another powerful practice I embraced is taking moments of stillness and paying attention to my breathing. Sitting quietly for just 60 seconds and noticing how my body feels afterwards helps me reconnect and appreciate progress. This mindfulness supports the spiritual aspect of strength by signaling aliveness. Overall, strength is a negotiation, not a surrender. Aging doesn’t mean shutting down but choosing which signals to keep sending to your body. It’s empowering to realize that with small, consistent effort and positive self-talk, I’m telling my body, "You are still needed," which keeps muscles, posture, and movement alive and adaptive.
