Rewired This Way
Why do we pay to be scared? Here is what the Reel left out. In a Danish haunted house, visitors who came by their own choice enjoyed it more, and enjoyment peaked at a middle level of fear. On a German roller coaster, the average heart rate of 55 volunteers rose from 91 at rest to 153. In a brain scan of 31 adults, an expected painful shock that did not come lit up the reward regions. After a Pittsburgh haunted house, about half of 262 visitors felt better and 17% felt worse. Babies show the alarm early: 33 of 36 refused to crawl onto a glass drop that only looked like a cliff. (Andersen et al., 2020; Koschyk, 2005; Willems et al., 2025; Kerr et al., 2019; Gibson & Walk, 1960) What is the scariest thing you chose to do, and how did you feel afterward?
