Does lifting weights protect the aging brain? Here is what the Reel left out. In the UK Biobank, 466,788 people had their grip strength measured. The weakest fifth had a 72% higher risk of dementia than the strongest fifth. In the SMART trial, adults with mild memory trouble lifted at about 80% of their peak strength, and the weights were raised as they got stronger. The U.S. POINTER trial followed 2,111 adults aged 60 to 79 for two years on a full program of exercise, diet, brain training and social contact. It was not a weights-only test, but thinking improved, and more in the structured program. How much lifting? The CDC says one set of 8 to 12 repetitions, to the point where another is hard without help. What is one strength move you could start twice a week?
