Anyone else feel the same?
Our kids are so loved by grandparents, aunts, uncles, and everyone who delights in showering them with presents and sweet surprises. And we’re truly grateful for that. But as parents, we made a different commitment for our home:
to keep Jesus at the center, to teach our children the why behind the season, and to celebrate Christmas as His birthday before anything else.
We’ve also been blessed to give our children experiences that let them learn, explore, and see the world in ways we could only imagine and honestly, we wouldn’t change it for anything. These little moments of wonder? The joy in their faces? The memories we’re building together? That’s the real gift.
And while gifts aren’t the priority in our home, we also remind our littles that the opportunities they receive, the trips, the events, the experiences, come from hard work. Even as tiny content creators, they show up with us, learn with us, and grow with us. And we love guiding them through it all.
At the end of the day, our prayer is simple:
May they always know the love of Jesus, the value of memories, and the beauty of choosing presence over presents.

The holiday season often becomes synonymous with gift-giving and material celebrations that can overshadow what many families truly hold dear. The phrase highlighted in the article’s image, "Unpopular Opinion: We don't focus on gifts for Christmas...we focus on this instead," perfectly captures a growing mindset among parents who want to center the season on spiritual values and shared experiences rather than just presents. Focusing on Jesus as the heart of Christmas fundamentally reorients the holiday's meaning. It reminds families to celebrate the birth of Christ, the source of love and hope, offering children a purpose behind the festivity beyond commercial traditions. This faith-based approach can bring deeper joy, helping kids understand gratitude, generosity, and the importance of creating lasting memories. Equally vital is the decision to invest in experiences. Instead of accumulating material items, many parents are choosing to gift adventures, trips, or moments together—opportunities that expand children’s horizons and spark curiosity about the world. Such experiences encourage growth, learning, and family bonding, leaving children with stories and feelings that no toy can replicate. Moreover, teaching children that privileges and opportunities are often the fruits of hard work instills important life lessons about responsibility and earning. This mindset nurtures perseverance and appreciation while preparing them for future challenges. In today’s digital age, even young children participating as content creators can engage creatively and learn new skills while sharing their journeys with family and friends. Guiding them through this process teaches safe and positive online habits and self-expression. Ultimately, focusing on “presence over presents” strengthens family connections and underscores the real gifts of love, faith, and treasured time together. For parents wondering if they are alone in these views, know there is a vibrant community embracing this heartfelt approach to the holiday season—ready to support and share this meaningful journey with you.
