Are you breathing wrong while lifting?

Breathing techniques may not even cross your mind while lifting, it takes practice. Before D1 athletics I had no idea how beneficial the right breathing pattern can be for my workouts. I’ve learned it’s best for me to breathe in on the downward motion (or part I’m exerting less energy) and breathe out on the way up (or where the movement is the most difficult). This helps keep my heart rate controlled and helps me move smoother through my lifts. There are plenty of techniques and styles but this is what works for me! #lemon8fitness #lemon8partner #breathingmeditation #d1athletics #breathingtechniques

... Read moreWhen I first started hitting the gym, breathing during my lifts was the last thing on my mind. I'd just focus on moving the weight, often holding my breath or breathing erratically. It wasn't until I started delving deeper into fitness that I realized the truly crucial breath work was missing from my routine. Getting your breathing right isn't just about avoiding lightheadedness; it's a fundamental part of proper weightlifting technique that can significantly impact your strength, stability, and even prevent injury. My personal breakthrough came when I understood the simple principle: inhale during the eccentric (easiest) phase of the lift, and exhale during the concentric (hardest) phase. For me, that means breathing in as I lower the weight, and breathing out as I push or pull. This helps me keep my heart rate controlled and move more smoothly. But it’s not a one-size-fits-all, as everyone's breathing technique can be different, so it's about finding what empowers your specific movements. Let's talk about specific lifts. For compound movements like squats, proper breathing techniques for squats are vital. As you descend into the squat, take a deep breath into your belly, bracing your core as if preparing for a punch. This intra-abdominal pressure stabilises your spine, making you feel incredibly solid. Then, as you drive up, exhale powerfully through pursed lips. This method applies similarly to deadlifts, where bracing is paramount. Another example is breathing for shoulder presses. As I lower the dumbbells to my shoulders, I inhale deeply, filling my diaphragm. Then, as I press the weights overhead, I exhale with controlled force. This coordination helps me maintain tension and control throughout the movement, preventing unnecessary strain. The same goes for bench press breathing technique inhale exhale: inhale as the bar comes down to your chest, brace, and exhale as you press it back up. For heavier lifts, some lifters use the Valsalva maneuver, which involves holding your breath for a short period to create maximum intra-abdominal pressure. While effective for extreme loads to stabilize breathing, it's crucial to use this technique cautiously and only after mastering basic breathing patterns, as it can temporarily increase blood pressure. For most of my strength training, controlled exhales are sufficient and safer. Beyond just the main lifts, don't forget the importance of cool down breathing exercise gym sessions. After an intense workout, slowing down your breath can help your body transition from a high-stress state to recovery. Deep, diaphragmatic breaths for 5-10 minutes post-workout can lower your heart rate, calm your nervous system, and aid muscle recovery. It’s a small but powerful way to end your gym session feeling rejuvenated. Ultimately, integrating proper breathing into your weightlifting routine is a journey. It takes practice and conscious effort to make it second nature. But once you do, you'll notice a significant improvement in your performance, stability, and overall sense of control in the gym. Experiment with these techniques, pay attention to how your body responds, and you'll be on your way to stronger, safer lifts.
