I’m going to Nursing school !!! I’m an #nightowl

2024/9/25 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! You might remember my post about getting into Western Governors University's BSN pre-licensure program – well, the excitement is still absolutely real! Seeing that iconic WGU owl logo makes my heart flutter, knowing I'm officially on the path to becoming a future nurse. My orientation is just around the corner, and I’ve been doing tons of research, not just for myself, but to share with anyone else out there considering this journey, especially for the 2024, 2025, or even 2026 cohorts. One of the biggest reasons I chose WGU, and what I've heard is a major pro for many students, is the incredible flexibility. As someone who identifies as a #nightowl, the thought of being able to set my own schedule and accelerate my studies is a game-changer. No more rigid class times or commuting! This competency-based model means if I already know a subject, I can test out and move on. That's a huge advantage for getting my BSN done efficiently. I’m also really looking forward to the one-on-one mentor support. From what I’ve gathered, having a dedicated mentor can make a huge difference in staying motivated and on track in an online program. The affordability compared to many traditional programs was also a massive plus for me – making quality nursing education accessible is something I truly value. However, I'm also realistic about the challenges. While flexibility is a pro, it can also be a con if you're not self-disciplined. I know I'll need to be incredibly organized and proactive to stay on top of my studies without traditional classroom accountability. Another common point I've seen in student experiences is the intensive nature of the program. It's not just about passing tests; it's about demonstrating competency, which means a lot of self-directed learning and application. Some students mention that the lack of traditional lectures can be a hurdle if you thrive on direct instruction. Plus, as an online pre-licensure program, the clinical components will require careful planning and coordination on my end to ensure I get that invaluable hands-on experience. It’s a lot to juggle, but knowing these potential "cons" beforehand helps me prepare mentally. For anyone else looking into WGU for nursing, here are a few things I've learned that could help: Self-Discipline is Key: Treat your studies like a job. Set a schedule and stick to it. Utilize Your Mentor: Don't be afraid to reach out and use the support system WGU provides. They're there to guide you. Join Student Communities: Connect with other WGU nursing students online. Sharing experiences and tips can be invaluable. I plan to do this myself! Understand the Competency-Based Model: This isn't just about memorization. Focus on truly understanding and applying the material. Plan Your Practicum/Clinical Early: Especially for the pre-licensure program, understanding the clinical requirements and planning for them is crucial. I'm incredibly excited for this new chapter. It’s a big step, but with dedication and the right resources, I’m confident I’ll succeed. I’ll definitely be sharing more about my journey – the ups, the downs, and all the real student experiences – right here. Wish me luck!
