Just finished! #BookishReview 📚

🌸 Thank you NetGalley and HarperVia for providing me with an eARC in exchange for my honest review! This was such a whimsical and relatable story! 🙌🏻 It is short and fast paced! And don’t even get me started on the cover, is stunning! Throughout the book I was constantly reminded of Sailor Moon and Princess Lover 🩷 This was my very first book by this author, and I can’t wait for the opportunity to read the next one!

... Read moreWhen I first picked up "A Magical Girl Retires" by Park Seolyeon, beautifully brought into English by translator Anton Hur, I was immediately drawn to its intriguing premise. What happens after the battles are won, and the world is saved? This isn't just another fantasy story; it's a thoughtful, often humorous exploration of post-heroism life. Our protagonist, once a powerful magical girl, is now navigating the mundane realities of adulthood – getting a job, paying rent, and figuring out who she is without her magical duties. This unique blend of the fantastical past and the ordinary present is what makes the book so incredibly relatable and, frankly, brilliant. The original review perfectly captured the "whimsical" and "fast-paced" nature of the story, and I couldn't agree more. Park Seolyeon has a way of infusing everyday scenarios with a gentle, enchanting charm, making even a mundane commute feel significant. The pacing truly is excellent; you'll find yourself flying through chapters, eager to see how our retired hero adapts to her new, quieter existence. It's not about grand quests anymore, but about the smaller, more personal victories – like making new friends or finding a new passion. The stunning cover, which I enjoyed on my e-reader, perfectly sets the tone for this unique narrative, hinting at the magic within, even as the title suggests a departure from it. For anyone who, like me, grew up with classics like Sailor Moon or enjoyed the romantic fantasy of Princess Lover, this book will absolutely resonate. The echoes aren't just in the magical girl trope itself, but in the underlying themes of friendship, self-discovery, and standing up for what's right, even when the stakes aren't world-ending. There's a certain nostalgia for the innocence and power of those earlier days mixed with the mature reflection of an adult looking back. It’s like catching up with your favorite childhood hero, only she’s now trying to figure out her retirement plan in a world that no longer needs saving. What I really appreciated was how the book delves into the question of identity. If you've spent your formative years as a savior, who are you when that role is gone? It’s a struggle many can relate to, whether it’s leaving a demanding career, adjusting to a new phase of life, or simply trying to find your purpose beyond a single defining characteristic. This deeper exploration adds significant weight to the whimsical surface, making the characters feel incredibly real and deeply human. "A Magical Girl Retires" isn't just a fun read; it’s a surprisingly poignant one that offers comfort and understanding for anyone feeling a little lost in their own transition. It's a testament to Park Seolyeon's storytelling that she can tackle such universal themes through the lens of a magical girl. If you're looking for a book that's imaginative, heartwarming, and makes you think about your own journey beyond the spotlight, then you absolutely need to add this gem, expertly translated by Anton Hur, to your reading list. It’s truly a breath of fresh air in the fantasy genre, proving that even after the magic fades, new adventures await.
