After my surgery, I was told I needed to gain some weight back, but my appetite just wasn't there. That's when I discovered the magic of drinking my calories – and it completely changed my journey! It's not just about chugging sugary sodas; it's about smart, calorie-dense choices that nourish your body while helping you hit those weight gain goals. Let me share some of my go-to high-calorie drinks and tips that have made a huge difference for me. Super-Charged Smoothies: These are my absolute favorite for packing in calories. Instead of just fruit and water, I load mine up! Think a base of whole milk or full-fat yogurt, a scoop of my favorite high-calorie protein powder (a must for muscle gain!), a big spoonful of peanut butter or almond butter, a banana, and maybe some oats or even avocado for extra healthy fats. You can literally create a meal in a glass. For that extra kick, sometimes I'll even add a drizzle of olive oil – you barely taste it, but it adds a lot of calories! Hearty Soups: As the OCR mentioned, it's 'soup seasonnn!!' and soups are a fantastic way to get those calories in, especially if you're feeling under the weather or just don't have a huge appetite for solid food. My personal favorite is a rich, creamy soup. You can take a simple vegetable soup and elevate it by adding heavy cream, full-fat coconut milk, or even blending in some cooked lentils or beans for extra protein and carbs. And don't forget the protein source! Adding things like shredded chicken, fish (like the shrimp & crab from my dinner idea!), or even some cheese can turn a light broth into a substantial meal. Pair it with some Italian bread, as suggested by the OCR, and you've got a winner! Weight Gain Shakes & Meal Replacements: For those super busy days, or if you're looking for something ultra-convenient, weight gain meal replacement shakes are a lifesaver. Brands like Boost or Ensure are specifically designed to provide balanced nutrition and a high-calorie count in a smaller volume. I've found them incredibly helpful when I need a quick calorie boost without having to prepare anything. Just check the labels for sugar content and choose one that fits your dietary needs. Many people, including those advised by health professionals, use these to supplement their intake, especially for underweight adults. Other Calorie-Dense Sips: Full-Fat Dairy: Simple but effective. A glass of whole milk, or a creamy, full-fat yogurt parfait layered with granola, nuts, and fruit. Runny Oatmeal: Instead of water, cook your oatmeal with whole milk, and then stir in nut butter, honey, seeds (chia, flax), and dried fruit. It's easy to drink down if it's not too thick. High-Calorie Juices: While fruit juice should be consumed in moderation, opting for juices like grape, prune, or mango juice can provide more calories than water if you’re trying to gain weight, especially when compared to diet drinks.
