Liver
The liver is the largest internal organ, located in the upper right abdomen below the diaphragm. It weighs about 1.2–1.5 kg and has a reddish-brown color. The liver has four lobes: right, left, caudate, and quadrate, supported by ligaments such as the falciform, coronary, triangular, and round ligaments. It plays a major role in metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats and produces bile that helps digest fats, which flows through bile ducts to the gallbladder and duodenum. The liver receives oxygenated blood from the hepatic artery and nutrients from the portal vein. It detoxifies drugs and toxins and stores glycogen, vitamins (A, D, B12, K), and iron. Diseases include hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver, and liver cancer.
From my experience studying anatomy and physiology, I've come to truly appreciate how complex and crucial the liver is to overall health. This design enables the liver to act as a filtration and processing hub, detoxifying harmful substances and metabolizing carbs, proteins, and fats for energy and bodily functions. Bile production is another critical function I found noteworthy — the liver produces bile that travels through bile ducts to the gallbladder and duodenum, aiding fat digestion. Understanding liver diseases was equally eye-opening. Conditions such as hepatitis (caused by viruses A, B, and C), cirrhosis from chronic liver damage, fatty liver disease often linked to lifestyle, and liver cancer highlight the importance of liver health. I’ve learned that early detection and lifestyle choices can significantly influence liver function and prevent serious complications. Additionally, the liver stores essential nutrients like glycogen for energy, vitamins A, D, B12, and K, as well as iron. This storage function means the liver supports your body's rapid response to metabolic demands. Personally, this knowledge motivated me to adopt healthier habits to support liver health, such as balanced nutrition and limiting alcohol consumption.
