I have never felt the need to apologize for being white, but I have felt the need to apologize for acts perpetrated by my ancestors who owned slaves and fought in the War to continue the institution of slavery in this nation. When I discovered records that my ancestors bought land that included slaves, I was appalled. It hurt my soul.
