common vaginal infections & what to do!

2024/4/18 Edited to

... Read moreIt's a fact of life for many of us – experiencing a vaginal infection can be uncomfortable, confusing, and sometimes, a little scary! Most women will encounter at least one of these common issues in their lifetime, so understanding them better is a huge step towards feeling more in control of your health. While seeing a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment is always the best first step, there's so much we can do to prevent these annoying invaders. Let’s dive a little deeper into the three common culprits: Bacterial Vaginosis (BV), Yeast Infections, and Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), and I’ll share some of my go-to tips for keeping them at bay. Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): Understanding the Unbalance BV happens when there’s an overgrowth of certain bacteria, throwing off the natural delicate balance in your vagina. It's not an STI, but it can sometimes be linked to sexual activity. What does it feel like? From my experience and what I've learned, the most tell-tale sign is often a 'fishy' odor, especially after sex, along with a thin, grayish-white discharge. You might also notice some itching or burning during urination. To help prevent BV, I always make sure to avoid douching (it disrupts your natural pH!), use mild, unscented soaps for personal hygiene, and wear breathable cotton underwear. Probiotics, both oral and vaginal, can also be a game-changer for maintaining a healthy bacterial balance. Yeast Infections: Tackling the Fungal Foe Ah, yeast infections – caused by an overgrowth of a fungus called Candida. If you've had one, you know the intense itching and irritation that comes with it! Beyond that, you might experience a thick, white, 'cottage cheese-like' discharge, along with redness and swelling of the vulva and labia minora. What makes them pop up? Antibiotics, hormonal changes (like during pregnancy), a high-sugar diet, or even tight, synthetic clothing can create the perfect breeding ground. My prevention tactics include choosing loose, cotton underwear, changing out of wet swimsuits or gym clothes quickly, and trying to keep my sugar intake in check. Probiotics can also support your body’s natural defenses against yeast overgrowth. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): The Burning Truth UTIs occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract, usually through the urethra. While not strictly a vaginal infection, the symptoms can be equally uncomfortable and often confused with other issues. The classic signs are a frequent, urgent need to pee (even if nothing comes out!), a burning sensation during urination, and sometimes cloudy or strong-smelling urine. In more severe cases, you might feel pelvic pain or pressure. What helps? Staying super hydrated by drinking plenty of water is crucial. I also make sure to pee immediately after sex, and always, always wipe from front to back after using the toilet. Avoiding irritating feminine products can also help reduce your risk. When to Seek Help & General Wellness Tips It’s super important to remember that while these tips can help with prevention, if you suspect you have an infection, consulting a doctor is essential for an accurate diagnosis and the right treatment. Self-diagnosing can lead to incorrect treatment and worsen the problem. Remember, your body is unique, and what works for one person might be different for another. Listening to your body, practicing good hygiene, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are your best allies in keeping common vaginal infections at bay. Don't be afraid to talk openly with your healthcare provider – they're there to help you stay healthy and comfortable!

Wait, do I have an infection because whenever I pee, it doesn’t burn all the time it like rarely burns. It only burns sometimes not all the time and it’s not really itchy, but it sometimes itches and then most of the time after I take a shower it’s gone
