As a huge horror fan, I love using Letterboxd to keep track of all the movies I watch, and especially to find new gems or revisit old favorites. It’s such a great platform for logging your cinematic journey and seeing what other people are raving about. Recently, I added four more incredible horror films to my log, and I just had to share them with you all! Each one brought something unique to the table, from modern queer horror to a timeless silent classic. First up, I finally watched Swallowed (2022), and wow, what an experience! This one truly lives up to its reputation as a queer body horror film. It's intense, unsettling, and incredibly well-executed. The story involves drug mules and, yes, those infamous bugs – it gets pretty gnarly, but in the best possible way for a horror enthusiast. I gave it a solid 5/5 because it pushed boundaries and kept me on the edge of my seat. If you’re into films that blend social commentary with visceral frights, and you don't mind a truly unique plot, this is a must-see. The movie poster itself is pretty striking, hinting at the distress and grotesque elements within. Next, I caught Cuckoo (2024), which has been on my radar for a while. This film offers a different kind of horror, leaning into psychological tension and atmospheric dread. I rated it 3/5, which means it was good, but perhaps didn't blow me away like 'Swallowed' did. However, I have to say, the soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal and really elevates the entire viewing experience. It really helps build that creepy, unsettling vibe. The poster with the wide-eyed character and the 'Cuckoo' headband perfectly captures the film's eerie aesthetic. It's definitely one to check out if you enjoy horror with a strong sense of mood and mystery. Then I journeyed back in time for The Man Who Laughs (1928). This silent film is an absolute masterpiece, and I was so moved by it. It’s a heartbreaking and exquisitely beautiful piece of art. The story, the acting, the iconic imagery – it all comes together to create something truly unforgettable. I gave it a 5/5 without hesitation. It's a long silent film, but every minute is worth it. It’s incredible to see how a film from nearly a century ago can still evoke such powerful emotions and resonate so deeply. The green-faced grinning man on the vintage movie poster is iconic for a reason, and if you haven't seen it, please do! Finally, I did a rewatch of Brain Damage (1988), and it was just as brilliant as I remembered, earning another 5/5 from me. This film is a wild ride – queer, surrealist, and deeply alien. It’s one of those movies that you just have to experience. The creature on the protagonist’s hand is both disgusting and strangely endearing, and the whole premise is incredibly unique. It's B-movie horror at its finest, but with a surprising amount of depth and a truly bizarre sense of humor. If you’re looking for something off-the-wall and genuinely weird, 'Brain Damage' is your pick. It’s a cult classic for a reason, and every rewatch uncovers new layers of its wonderfully messed-up world.
