I've been on a bit of a movie-watching spree lately and wanted to share my thoughts on the last four movies I've watched, covering a real mixed bag of genres within horror and cult cinema. It's always fun to dive into new (or old!) films and see what sticks, so here's a breakdown of my recent watches, complete with my personal ratings. First up was the iconic Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (1931), which I rated a solid 4/5. This classic black-and-white gem truly holds up, even almost a century later. Frederic March's transformation as Dr. Jekyll into the menacing Mr. Hyde is still captivating and genuinely unsettling, especially considering the special effects of its time. It’s a masterclass in psychological horror and a fantastic exploration of humanity's dual nature. The atmosphere is thick, and the tension builds wonderfully. If you appreciate classic cinema and foundational horror, this is absolutely worth a watch. It proves that scares don't need jump scares or gore to be effective. Next, I ventured into the bizarre world of Naked Lunch (1991), which also earned a 4/5 from me. Directed by the legendary David Cronenberg, this film takes us on a truly wild and surreal ride. Based on William S. Burroughs' novel, it's not your typical horror movie, but the body horror elements and the intensely grotesque, often disturbing, imagery are undeniably unsettling. It's a fever dream of a film, exploring themes of addiction, identity, and paranoia through its utterly unique visuals. It's weird, it's thought-provoking, and it definitely sticks with you long after the credits roll. Not for everyone, but if you like experimental, mind-bending cinema that pushes boundaries, give it a go! Then came a deeper dive into some more obscure picks. I watched a 1971 film titled 'ZOMBIE FRIEHT', and I honestly had to give it a 1/5. This one was a real struggle to get through. The plot felt incredibly thin, the pacing was a snail's pace, and the effects were minimal even for its era. It just didn't deliver any scares or real entertainment for me. It felt more like a test of endurance than an engaging horror movie. As much as I appreciate cult classics and hidden gems, this one, for me, was a definite skip. Finally, I rounded off my watch list with 'ZDMBIEG INROCK WE TRUST', a zombie flick from 1985, which I rated a 2/5. While it had some of that undeniable fun 80s cheese and a certain charm that comes with low-budget horror from that decade, it still didn't quite hit the mark. It delivered a few unintentionally funny moments and some classic 80s aesthetics, but overall, it's pretty forgettable. If you're a die-hard B-movie zombie fan and love sifting through the obscure, you might find a few laughs or interesting elements, but don't expect a masterpiece that will change your view on the zombie genre. It’s always fascinating to see how horror evolves and takes different forms, from psychological classics to surreal body horror and obscure zombie flicks.
