the last four movies i’ve watched

2025/1/13 Edited to

... Read moreHey Lemon8 fam! So, I’ve been on a bit of a horror kick lately, diving into some old favorites and a couple of new-to-me films. There's just something about revisiting those classic scares or discovering a hidden gem, you know? This past week, I managed to squeeze in four movies, and I definitely have some thoughts to share on each. First up was Cube (1997), a true sci-fi horror masterpiece that I've seen before, but it never fails to impress. This rewatch absolutely confirmed its 5/5 rating for me. The premise is so unique: a group of strangers wakes up in a bizarre, cube-shaped prison, each room potentially booby-trapped. The whole concept hinges on mathematical puzzles to find safe passages, which adds such a clever layer to the survival horror. The psychological tension is palpable as the characters grapple with their predicament and each other. It's not just about the gore; it's about human nature under extreme duress, the fear of the unknown, and the desperate search for an escape. Every time I watch it, I find new details in the intricate design of the Cube and the characters' unraveling sanity. If you're into smart, claustrophobic horror, this one's a must-see. Next, I revisited Red Dragon (2002), another strong 5/5 rewatch. As a prequel to The Silence of the Lambs, it delves into the brilliant and terrifying mind of Hannibal Lecter, but the real focus is on FBI profiler Will Graham and his pursuit of the serial killer known as 'The Tooth Fairy.' What I love about Red Dragon is how it builds suspense and character depth. Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal is, as always, chillingly captivating, but Edward Norton’s portrayal of Graham's tormented psyche is equally compelling. It’s a masterclass in psychological thriller filmmaking, exploring the darkness within humanity without relying purely on jump scares. The cat-and-mouse game between Graham and the killer, coupled with Lecter’s manipulative influence, makes for an incredibly engaging and thought-provoking experience. Then things took a bit of a different turn with Workout (1990). Now, this one was... an experience! If the title makes you think of cheesy 80s aerobics videos mixed with horror, you wouldn't be far off. From what I recall, it was definitely in the vein of a B-movie, leaning heavily into the 'funny workout hot women' trope, as the OCR aptly pointed out. It wasn't exactly 'good' in the traditional sense, but it had this weird, campy charm that made it strangely watchable. It felt like a relic from a bygone era of horror, where the scares were secondary to the aesthetic. It’s the kind of movie you put on for a laugh with friends, not for a genuine fright. Definitely a guilty pleasure for those who appreciate the more obscure side of horror. Finally, I braced myself for Body Double (1984). This one was a bit of a mixed bag, which aligns with the 'GOOFY GOOD CONCEPT BAD EXECUTION' sentiment I found. The concept itself was intriguing – a struggling actor gets involved in a voyeuristic plot that leads to murder, blurring the lines of reality and performance. It has that classic neo-noir, Hitchcockian suspense vibe. However, the execution felt a bit clunky and, at times, genuinely goofy. There were moments where the plot twists felt forced, and some character choices were just baffling. It tried to be stylish and provocative, but ended up feeling a little disjointed. While the initial idea had potential, it didn't quite stick the landing for me, earning it a lower score. It's a prime example of how a brilliant concept needs equally brilliant execution to truly shine. Overall, it was a fun week of movie watching! Revisiting Cube and Red Dragon reminded me why they're classics, while the others offered a peek into different eras and styles of horror. What have you all been watching lately? I'd love to hear your latest movie recommendations!
