5 tips for Beginner Climbers

I’m an AMGA Single Pitch Instructor and these are my best tips for beginner rock climbers!

Tip 1: start in the gym!

Not everyone has the resources to go outdoors to start. Go to your local climbing gym and get familiar with how to move on the wall. Oftentimes there are classes you can take that focus on movement and technical basics.

Tip 2: you don’t need ALL the gear

I think a lot of people get overwhelmed by how much gear is needed for technical climbing, but you don’t need it all right away. Especially if you’re going to primarily climb indoors to start, get shoes that fit you and maybe a chalk bag. THEN, when you move on to ropes, get a harness and belay device. If you start climbing outdoors, buy a helmet (safety is sexy 😉)

Tip 3: learn how to tie in and belay

If you start climbing ropes, it’s important to know 2 basic skills: tying in with a figure-8 follow through and toprope belaying. These the basics you need to start! And if you know these skills, you’ll have an easier time finding climbing partners since they won’t have to do all the work. There are gym classes you can take to learn these skills.

Tip 4: focus on meeting your community!

Gyms are a great place to meet other climbers. The community is such an integral part of climbing, so make friends, you might learn something from them!

Tip 5: technique > strength

I think a lot of people think they need to jump into strength training for climbing, but this can sometimes lead to injuries in beginners. Focus on learning technique at the very beginning. The strength will come!

Tip 6: Master Your Footwork – It's Your Secret Weapon! While Tip 5 touched on technique over strength, let's dive deeper into one of the most critical aspects of good technique: footwork. When I first started climbing, I was convinced it was all about arm strength. I’d pull myself up with all my might, only to quickly get fatigued. Then, an experienced climber showed me how to truly use my feet, and it was a game-changer! Think of your climbing shoes not just as sticky rubber, but as tools to stand on the smallest features. Focus on precision: look for footholds, even tiny edges or smears, and place your feet deliberately. Try to keep your hips close to the rock wall and your arms straight – this transfers your weight to your stronger leg muscles, saving your precious arm strength. Practice drills like silent feet (placing your foot without making a sound) or flagging (using your non-weight-bearing leg for balance) in the gym. This attention to technique will make you a much more efficient and graceful climber, allowing you to tackle harder routes without feeling like you need massive arm strength. Tip 7: The Unsung Heroes: Warm-up and Cool-down It’s easy to get excited and jump straight onto the wall, but trust me, neglecting your warm-up and cool-down is a mistake many beginners make – myself included, early on! A proper warm-up prepares your muscles and joints for the demands of climbing, significantly reducing your risk of injury. Start with 5-10 minutes of light cardio, like jogging or jumping jacks, to get your blood flowing. Follow this with dynamic stretches for your shoulders, wrists, and hips – think arm circles, wrist rotations, and leg swings. After your session, don't just pack up your gear. Take 5-10 minutes for a cool-down. Gentle static stretches, especially for your forearms, shoulders, and back, will help with muscle recovery and flexibility. I learned this the hard way after a few too many sore mornings that could have been avoided! Prioritizing this routine will keep you climbing stronger, longer, and with fewer aches. Tip 8: Embrace the Fall, Learn from Every Send (or Fail!) Climbing is a journey of continuous learning, and a big part of that is embracing failure. Don't be afraid to try a move and fall; it's an integral part of the process! Whether you're bouldering or on a rope with a partner to belay you, learning how to fall safely is crucial. If bouldering, practice landing on the pads. When on ropes, communicate with your belay partner and trust your harness and gear. My biggest breakthroughs often came after I finally let go of the fear of falling and started analyzing why I fell. Every attempt, successful or not, offers a lesson. Watch how more experienced climbers move, ask for "beta" (advice on how to climb a route), and don't be afraid to experiment with different body positions. Remember that even with a helmet and all the safety gear, the mental game is huge. The climbing community is incredibly supportive, so use them as a resource for encouragement and advice. The challenges you face, and overcome, will be the most rewarding part of your climbing adventure!
