week 1 of training for a half marathon!

2024/8/1 Edited to

... Read moreStarting a half marathon journey is exciting, and getting Week 1 right sets the tone for everything that follows! When I first planned my training, I quickly realized the importance of not just running, but running *smart*. My main focus for this initial phase, as you saw from my smartwatch stats showing an easy pace, was building a solid foundation without overdoing it. This is crucial for endurance and injury prevention, which I've learned the hard way in the past! One of the biggest takeaways from my first week, and something I can't stress enough, is the power of a proper warmup walk and cool down walk. For my Sunday run, I started with a gentle 2-minute warmup walk, followed by a 5-minute run, and ended with another 2-minute cool down walk. It might seem short, but even those few minutes make a huge difference. On Monday, I stepped it up a bit with a 5-minute warmup walk, then a 25-minute run, and a 5-minute cool down walk. These walks aren't just for show; they gradually increase blood flow to your muscles before you start and help flush out lactic acid afterward. I've found that taking the time for a dedicated walking cooldown after run really aids recovery and makes me much fresher for the next session. My weekly plan involved easy pace runs all week, ensuring I wasn't pushing too hard. For example, on Wednesday, it was a 5-minute warmup, 20-minute run, and 5-minute cool down. And again on Friday, a 5-minute warmup, 25-minute run, and 5-minute cool down. I keep an eye on my pace and distance without obsessing over speed initially. The goal isn't to be fast right now, but to consistently put in the miles and build my aerobic base. I've even found myself smiling during these easy pace runs, which is a great sign that I'm not overexerting! Beyond the physical routine, Week 1 was also about listening to my body. If something felt off, I adjusted. Hydration was key, and I made sure to fuel myself properly. Tracking my runs with my smartwatch, seeing the distance covered and the time spent, was incredibly motivating. It's not just about logging miles; it's about building a sustainable habit. So, if you're like me and 16 weeks out from your half marathon, embrace those easy runs and never skip your cool downs. They are truly the unsung heroes of successful training!

Half Marathon Training Plan
Last week I ran my first half marathon in almost 2 years!! I had taken a break from longer distances and stuck to 5 and 10Ks for a while since that’s what I enjoy most! But training for this half helped me get motivated to do longer runs and actually ignited a new love for longer (for me) runs!

Should I try to run a 1/2 a marathon?
I’ve been training hard and can now run a 5K at an 11-minute mile pace. The next big question: should I go for a half marathon? 13.1 miles feels huge, but I’m starting to believe I can do it. What do you think — go for it?
