Black Queens…I need y’all’s help🥹

Ok now that I have the beautiful melanin girlies here I need some help and I’m kinda nervous to ask but Im hoping there will be at least one girlie who can point me in the right direction☺️

Here’s the story…my name is Hannah and as you can tell from the picture I am dating a black man. My boyfriend and I moved to a new town about 4 months ago and it’s 4 hours away from our hometown where his hairstylist is located. As you can see he has dreads and loves them but one problem…we haven’t been able to find anyone to give him a retwist and it’s been roughly two months since his last one.

I’ll be honest with you guys we don’t have a lot of extra money to spend but I know how important it is to properly take care of dreads and we’ve talked about me just learning how to do it but tbh I’m scared. His birthday is coming up and we just can’t afford a retwist(only person we have found close to us is $100 plus another $50 for a haircut- no wash). I decided that I want to surprise him by learning how to do a retwist or at least learning how to take care of his hair but tbh idek where to start so I have two questions…

1) Should I learn how to do his hair or just leave it to the professionals and pay the $150?

2) If I do his hair, what products do I need, where do I even start, and what’s the best way to learn?

p.s please feel free to drop any advice you have!! It is appreciated!! 💕

... Read moreDreadlocks are a beautiful and culturally significant hairstyle that requires regular maintenance to keep them healthy and looking their best. Retwisting is an essential part of dreadlock care that helps to tighten the roots and maintain the neat appearance of the locs. When professional hairdressing services are too costly or inaccessible, especially after moving to a new town, learning how to perform a retwist at home can be a rewarding and cost-effective alternative. Getting started with retwisting involves understanding the correct techniques and using the right products. Key supplies typically include a residue-free dreadlock shampoo to keep the scalp clean without buildup, a natural locking gel or cream specifically formulated for locs to help hold the twist, and a spray bottle with water to keep hair slightly damp during styling. It is important to avoid heavy oils or products that cause buildup and to never overwash the hair, which can lead to dryness and breakage. For beginners, watching tutorial videos online from experienced dread hairstylists can provide visual guidance and tips on how to section the hair properly, twist in the direction of natural growth, and maintain uniform tension without causing damage. Practice is important, as retwisting too tightly can damage the scalp or cause thinning, while too loose a twist may lead to quicker unraveling. There are numerous online communities and forums, including those dedicated to #girlswithdreads and #dreadheadbaby, where newcomers can ask questions, share experiences, and receive support. Additionally, local beauty supply stores may stock dreadlock-friendly products and offer advice. While professional retwisting usually yields the best results, home care can be an effective way to manage dreadlocks between salon visits or when budget constraints prevent frequent appointments. Maintaining a healthy scalp with gentle cleansing and moisturizing, minimizing manipulation, and protecting dreadlocks during sleep with satin scarves or pillowcases will also contribute to the longevity and appearance of the hairstyle. By taking small steps to learn and practice dreadlock care, it’s possible to provide your loved one with thoughtful support and even personalize his hair care routine to suit his lifestyle and preferences. With patience and proper technique, you can help keep those beautiful dreads looking fresh without the usual financial strain.
