If you want a really good core workout— this is it. I normally do these while I stretch but it’s great for getting the blood flowing, reducing stress and tension, and has many other great health benefits.
If you’ve never done yoga, the technical term for what I’m doing is a headstand/Sirsasana. I would definitely do your research prior to attempting this at home. There are many different ways to do a headstand and they have a lot of tutorials on YouTube for beginners, if interested.

I've found that one of the most common questions people have about headstands, or Sirsasana, is whether they truly target the core. From my own experience, the answer is a resounding yes! When you're balancing upside down, your entire core acts as a stabilizer. It's not just about crunching; it's about isometric strength. Your transverse abdominis, those deep core muscles, work incredibly hard to keep your spine stable, while your obliques engage to prevent swaying. Even your rectus abdominis assists in maintaining that strong, aligned posture. It's a full-body engagement, but the core is definitely the star, constantly firing to keep you upright. The focus and control required also build incredible mental strength alongside physical endurance. Beyond the physical benefits, I’ve also realized how much personal style can play a role in my fitness journey. There’s something empowering about feeling good in what you wear, whether it’s a comfortable pair of leggings or, as seen in some of my practice photos, even something a bit more artistic like thigh-high stockings on my yoga mat. It's all about self-expression and confidence. For me, it adds an element of inspiration to my practice, making me feel strong and artistic as I move through poses like the headstand or even coming down into a relaxing Child's Pose. It’s not just about the workout; it’s about embracing your unique journey and finding joy in every aspect of it. If you’re looking to enhance your core workout, especially if headstands feel a bit daunting or you're curious about other methods, incorporating a yoga block can be a game-changer. I’ve recently added a few block exercises to my routine, and they really intensify the core engagement. Here are a couple of my favorite ways to use a yoga block for a stronger core: Block Squeeze Crunches: Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat. Place a yoga block between your inner thighs and squeeze it firmly. As you exhale, lift your head and shoulders off the mat, performing a crunch. The block squeeze activates your inner thighs and deep core muscles, making the crunch far more effective. Aim for 3 sets of 15-20 repetitions. Plank with Block: Get into a forearm plank position, ensuring your body forms a straight line from head to heels. Place a yoga block under your feet (making it slightly harder) or between your thighs (to engage inner thighs and core more). Focus on drawing your navel towards your spine and maintaining a neutral pelvis. Hold for 30-60 seconds, repeating 3 times. The instability added by the block forces your core to work overtime for stabilization. Supine Leg Lifts with Block: Lie on your back, hands under your lower back for support if needed. Place the yoga block between your ankles and squeeze. Slowly lift your legs towards the ceiling until they are perpendicular to the floor, then slowly lower them without letting your heels touch the mat. The block ensures your legs work together and intensifies the lower abdominal engagement. Try 3 sets of 10-12 controlled repetitions. These exercises are fantastic for building foundational core strength, which can eventually help you progress towards more advanced inversions like Sirsasana. Remember to listen to your body and modify as needed. Adding these variations to your routine can truly elevate your yoga fitness journey!
