Choosing a Hospital for Labor & Delivery

What I considered when choosing a hospital for labor and delivery is:

☑️ the distance from my home

This seems obvious, but you want to make sure to check the distance between the hospital and your home. Make sure it isn’t too long of a drive in case of an emergency. Our hospital was a 25 minute drive away 🚗

☑️ check for parking and transportation

Make sure there is nearby parking or if transportation options are available. The parking garage may not be close to the Labor and Delivery wing, and may require a shuttle to get you there.

☑️look at hospital ratings

Reading reviews from other patients who had their labor and delivery at the hospital you’re looking at, and looking for awards the hospital has earned for maternity care, can provide peace of mind.

☑️hospital amenities

Look for photos of the delivery and recovery rooms to see if they fit your needs. The size, comfort, and privacy of rooms are all important things when considering options.

☑️birthing options

What type of birth are you wanting to have? Some hospitals may provide water births, or have natural birthing units.

There’s so many factors when considering the perfect plan for labor and delivery. It can also be overwhelming, so it’s important to weigh the options well beforehand!

... Read moreOkay, so you've chosen your dream hospital, packed your bag, and you're officially in the waiting game! But then comes the big question: When do I actually need to go to the hospital? This was one of my biggest anxieties, and that's where the famous '5-1-1 rule' truly became my best friend. It’s a guideline I learned from my maternity care team that really helped me feel prepared. The 5-1-1 rule is a simple framework to help you decide when it's time to head in for active labor and delivery. It stands for: 5 minutes apart: Your contractions are coming consistently every five minutes from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next. 1 minute long: Each contraction lasts for about one full minute, from start to finish. 1 hour duration: This pattern has been consistent for at least one hour. My doctor explained that this rule is really about ensuring you're in active labor, not just early labor or Braxton Hicks contractions. You don't want to rush to the hospital too early and then be sent home, which can be exhausting and discouraging! I remember anxiously timing my contractions on an app, trying to make sure I wasn't just imagining things. It's truly a game-changer for reducing stress about 'is this it?!' Knowing this rule gave me a clear benchmark. During early labor, before the 5-1-1 rule kicks in, I found it helpful to stay home, stay hydrated, and try to relax. Walking, taking a warm bath (if your water hasn't broken), or just resting in a comfortable space can be helpful. This is also a good time to double-check your hospital bag and make sure everything is ready for your arrival. Your chosen hospital's birthing options might even include a tub or shower you can use in early labor, if you decide to go in before active labor really ramps up. However, it's super important to know that the 5-1-1 rule is a *guideline*, not a strict law. There are definitely times you should call your doctor or head to the hospital immediately, regardless of your contraction pattern. These include: Your water breaks: Especially if the fluid is green or brownish, which could indicate meconium. Even if it's clear, you'll need to go in. Heavy vaginal bleeding: Any bleeding heavier than spotting needs immediate medical attention. Decreased fetal movement: If your newborn baby isn't moving as much as usual, call your provider right away. You want to ensure that precious little one is safe and sound. You're experiencing other concerning symptoms: Severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, or a fever could be signs of complications like preeclampsia. When I was picking my hospital, I also considered how comfortable I'd be laboring at home for a while, knowing I had a good understanding of the 5-1-1 rule. Having a nicely sized room with good maternity care at the hospital was key for when I did arrive. I made sure to check out photos of the hospital bed and general room sizes during my hospital tour. Knowing what birthing options were available, like a shower or tub, also played into my decision on how long I'd try to manage contractions at home. Ultimately, the goal is a safe and positive experience for both you and your little one, whether you're in a hospital bed or preparing for your baby in a bassinet nearby. Always communicate with your healthcare provider if you're unsure about anything – they are there to help guide you!
