Book Review: Tender is the Flesh

I had somewhat high expectations for this book considering it was decently popular last year, I finally brought it with me on vacation recently because it’s a breeze to get through so I knew I’d finish it before I got home. I finished it very quick and it was disturbing but I give it the 2.5 out of 5 stars because the author wanted to instill strong emotions into the reader and she sure did. It was talent, but I would also never read her works again.

Fun Fact: This original story was published in Spanish (2017) but was later translated by Sarah Moses (2020) to English.

... Read moreOkay, so diving deeper into Tender is the Flesh after my initial review, I really wanted to unpack why it left me with such a strong, albeit conflicted, feeling. When I first saw the book cover, I was immediately intrigued. There are a few different versions out there, but the English edition I read had this stark, almost unsettling visual that perfectly hinted at the dark themes within. It's fascinating how the Spanish edition cover often has a slightly different feel, sometimes more overtly graphic, yet both do an excellent job of setting the mood for what’s inside. In fact, seeing the "collage-style graphic" of both covers side-by-side really highlighted the artistic choices made to represent such a challenging story. Even the audiobook cover maintains this eerie aesthetic, which I appreciate for consistency. My experience with the actual story was intense. The author truly has a talent for crafting "disturbing scenes" that linger in your mind long after you've put the book down. It's not horror in the traditional sense, but the psychological implications and the sheer bleakness of the world presented felt incredibly unsettling. I remember feeling a constant knot in my stomach while reading, which I guess was exactly the author's intention – to instill strong emotions. While I appreciated the raw power of the narrative, it was definitely a heavy read, and I found myself needing breaks to process everything. The writing style was surprisingly accessible, almost "simple writing" as some might describe it. This simplicity, however, often made the horrific events even more stark and impactful. There wasn't flowery language to soften the blows; instead, the prose was direct, almost clinical, which heightened the sense of dread. This straightforward approach meant I breezed through the pages quickly, even though the subject matter was so profound and disturbing. One aspect that stood out was the "abrupt ending." It left me with a lot to ponder, but also a sense of unfinished business, almost like a sudden jolt. It felt fitting for the narrative, yet I personally prefer a bit more resolution or at least a clearer sense of direction for the characters, even in dystopian fiction. This kind of ending really makes you sit with the story and its implications, forcing you to draw your own conclusions about humanity and morality within the book's context. Reflecting on my 2.5-star rating, it really comes down to this: the book is undeniably impactful and well-crafted in its ability to provoke. It's a testament to the author's skill to create such a visceral reaction. However, for me, personally, the overall experience was so relentlessly grim that it pushed beyond my usual enjoyment threshold. It's a book I'm glad I read for its unique perspective and its contribution to literary discussion, but it's not one I'd revisit. It's like witnessing something incredibly powerful but also deeply unsettling, leaving you with a sense of unease. The imagery and themes, much like a faded "dried rose illustration" on "torn paper," evoke beauty in decay, but also a lasting sense of melancholy. It certainly makes you think about the boundaries of humanity and survival.
