What’s wrong with having a big nose?

black facial features aka Afrocentric features aren’t really normalized in the black community. Eurocentric features have been made the beauty standard. White people literally put their beauty standards on black people to follow and that’s literally crazy the amount of hate black women face in particular for having the features we were born with is crazy but how do yall feel about it

... Read moreIt's a conversation I relate to so deeply – this feeling that our natural Afrocentric features aren't always seen as the standard of 'skönhet' (beauty) in the wider world. Growing up, I often found myself wishing for different features, influenced by what I saw celebrated in magazines and on TV. It's crazy how much pressure there is, especially on black women, to fit into a Eurocentric ideal, leading to so much self-doubt about the very features we were born with, like our beautiful, unique noses. But what exactly are these Afrocentric features we're talking about? They encompass a beautiful spectrum of traits common within the African diaspora – from rich, diverse skin tones that glow, to full, luscious lips, a variety of striking broad-set nose shapes, and incredible hair textures ranging from coils to kinks. These aren't just physical attributes; they're a part of our heritage, our strength, and our identity. Thinking about the image of the dark-skinned woman, adorned with jewelry, sitting confidently, it's a powerful reminder of the inherent beauty and grace within us. The challenge often lies in dismantling the internalized biases that tell us these features are somehow 'less than.' For me, understanding and celebrating Afrocentric beauty has been a journey of self-discovery and reclaiming my narrative. It’s about actively seeking out representation that reflects and uplifts us. I've found so much empowerment in following creators and artists who showcase the stunning diversity of black beauty, which helps to redefine what 'skönhet' truly means. Practically, how can we cultivate this appreciation for our Afrocentric features? It starts with self-love and intentional choices. Experiment with makeup to highlight, not hide, your features – embracing the natural contour of your nose or making your full lips pop with vibrant colors. Find hairstyles that celebrate your natural texture instead of trying to alter it. Adorning yourself with jewelry or clothing that makes you feel powerful and beautiful, much like the woman in the illustration, can be a daily act of affirmation. It’s also about changing the conversation around us. When we discuss beauty, let's consciously include and uplift Afrocentric standards. Challenge negative narratives when you hear them, and champion positive representation. Our features are not 'wrong'; they are a testament to our ancestral beauty and resilience. By embracing and celebrating every aspect of ourselves, we not only empower ourselves but also pave the way for future generations to grow up seeing their natural beauty as the ultimate standard.
