low cortisol
we hear so much about high cortisol but what about low?
yeaaaars ago I actually struggled with low cortisol or “adrenal fatigue”.
the term adrenal fatigue can be misleading though as it’s more so “HPA axis dysfunction”.
I love the DUTCH test for hormone testing which is what i used to figure out I had low cortisol from yeaaaars of chronic stress activation.
and interestingly enough i found out it wasn’t my adrenals!! it was my pituitary.
HPA axis is your hypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis.
hypothalamus communicates to your pituitary, and your pituitary communicates to your adrenals.
you see how it’s possible it’s not an adrenal issue? it MAY be that the adrenals are not getting the correct signals.
in that case, you can take alllll the things for you adrenals but it won’t budge until you support the pituitary- in the case like mine.

Low cortisol, commonly referred to as adrenal fatigue, can often be misunderstood. It is crucial to recognize that it stems from HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) axis dysfunction rather than solely from adrenal issues. Signs of low cortisol can include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, poor sleep, and even cravings for salt or sugar. Holistic practitioners often assess symptoms and use tools like the DUTCH test to identify hormonal imbalances accurately. Supporting pituitary health may be the key to restoring proper adrenal function. Addressing low cortisol requires a holistic approach involving stress management, dietary changes, and lifestyle adjustments. Effective stress-reduction techniques such as meditation, yoga, and adequate rest can significantly improve hormonal balance. If you suspect low cortisol levels, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider to receive proper diagnosis and treatment options tailored to your unique situation. Remember, achieving hormonal balance is a journey that involves understanding your body's needs and supporting them appropriately.
