We’ve had a lot of screen time the last few days because the flu hit our house hard. Sick toddlers + a sick mom means survival mode… but my former educator brain still has a few lines it won’t cross.

So these are the toddler shows that passed our low-stimulation test, the ones we keep in moderation, and the ones that were an immediate no.

Some of these surprised me, some are millennial nostalgia, and a couple I turned off almost instantly.

Now I’m curious — what toddler shows are a yes in your house?

... Read moreAs a parent and former educator, I've found that choosing toddler shows during sick days requires balancing entertainment with calming content to avoid overstimulation. When my household was hit hard by the flu recently, I tested various shows to see which ones would help keep my toddlers engaged without increasing their anxiety or restlessness. One standout for us was "Dragon Tales" — its slower pace and focus on problem-solving made it both nostalgic and fantastic for quiet learning time. "Ms. Rachel's" newer episodes are packed with early learning concepts, though their faster pace means I reserve them for shorter viewing sessions. "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood" was another favorite, offering episodes centered on emotional intelligence, which resonated well with my toddler. We found that many modern cartoons felt too chaotic and overstimulating, so we avoided shows like the new versions of "Sesame Street" which, while educational, moved too quickly for our needs. Instead, slower-paced, gentle shows like "LeapFrog" and even the classic "Barney" brought a comforting rhythm that helped soothe my kids during their sick days. Managing screen time under these conditions also meant occasional shows like "Blippi's Treehouse" which offer a calmer vibe compared to typical modern options. I found that limiting episode times to around five minutes helped prevent fatigue and kept engagement positive. For parents navigating screen time during illness, my advice is to prioritize shows that match your child's current tolerance for stimulation and support their emotional well-being. It's also helpful to mix in quiet activities like reading or puzzles between episodes. What toddler shows have you found helpful for creating a calm, educational environment during sick days? Sharing our experiences can provide great ideas and reassurance to fellow parents!
