Caring for low porosity hair can be challenging due to its resistant cuticle layer which makes moisture absorption difficult. From my personal experience, one of the most important steps is maintaining scalp health as a foundation. I found that clarifying my scalp monthly helps remove buildup and stimulate circulation, creating a better environment for hair growth. Using gentle, light oils warmed slightly before applying in a scalp massage not only encourages growth but also feels soothing. Maximizing moisture is crucial but can be tricky. Applying deep conditioning treatments frequently, paired with heat such as steam or a warm towel, really helps open the cuticles, making the hair more receptive to hydration. I avoid heavy conditioners or products with butters that can weigh the hair down or cause buildup. Instead, I use lightweight leave-ins and seal in moisture with a light oil rather than thick butters. Protective styling has been a game changer for my hair growth journey. Styles like low buns, box braids, or twists help reduce manipulation and protect my hair ends from damage. Tracking growth progress with a mini chart motivated me to stay consistent with my routine. Also, tucking my ends away prevents breakage and preserves length. Overall, combining scalp care, moisture management, and protective styling has made a significant difference in managing my low porosity hair and encouraging healthy growth.
