5 Month Old Tries Bananas!

My 5-month-old trying bananas for the first time—and watching those reactions never gets old. Starting solids has been such a fun milestone, and having the right baby feeding essentials makes the process easier and less messy.

If you want all of the baby feeding essentials we use, comment “BABY” to get the links sent straight to your DMs, or find everything linked in my bio.

... Read moreSeeing my little one try bananas for the first time at 5 months old was such a joy! It really got me thinking about when is the right time to introduce this popular fruit, and other solids generally. If you're wondering, 'when can baby have banana?', you're not alone! Most pediatricians recommend starting solids around 4-6 months, and bananas are often a go-to first food because they're soft, easy to mash, and packed with nutrients. Before diving in, I made sure my baby was showing clear signs of readiness. This includes good head and neck control, being able to sit with support, showing interest in what we're eating, and losing the tongue-thrust reflex (which pushes food out of their mouth). At 5 months, my little guy was definitely exhibiting these signs, which made me feel confident starting with something as gentle as a banana. When it came to preparation, I initially just mashed a ripe banana with a fork until it was super smooth. For babies just starting out, a puree consistency is best to avoid any choking hazards. As they get a bit older and more accustomed to chewing, around 6-8 months, you can offer slightly chunkier mashed banana or even soft, ripe strips for baby-led weaning. It's all about observing your baby and seeing what they're comfortable with. I've found that having a good baby food masher and some small, soft spoons really helped make the process easier and less messy, just like my original post mentioned! Bananas are fantastic for babies because they're a great source of potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and fiber. The fiber content can be really helpful for digestion, though sometimes too much can cause a bit of constipation in sensitive tummies. Always introduce new foods one at a time, waiting 3-5 days before introducing another, to easily identify any potential allergies or sensitivities. Luckily, bananas are rarely allergenic, but it's good practice for any new food. My experience with my 5-month-old trying bananas was so positive, and it really kickstarted our baby food journey. Remember, every baby is different, so while 5 months worked for us, some babies might be ready a little earlier or later. Always consult with your pediatrician for personalized advice. It's not just about when they can have bananas, but also how you introduce them and making it a fun, positive experience for both of you. Happy feeding!
