How Long a Minute Feels During a Code ⏱️

You know how people say “a minute isn’t that long”? I dare them to count to 60 seconds during a code and tell me that a minute doesn’t feel like an eternity. A breath. A blur. All at once.

Time does something weird in those moments - it stretches and collapses. You act, you think, you feel everything and nothing at the same time so quickly. I remember my first code it felt like I almost blacked out and was running off pure adrenaline. Thank god for the support of my healthcare team to help guide me through it. 💉

Does time go by slow or fast for you during a code?

... Read moreIn the high-stress environment of a medical code, time can feel distorted. For healthcare providers, what seems like a minute can stretch into an eternity filled with both urgency and chaos. Research shows that during critical moments, such as a 'code blue' scenario, individuals may experience heightened awareness, which causes their perception of time to slow down. This feeling stems from the brain's response to high-stakes situations, where it processes information more rapidly. Nurses often reflect on their experiences, noting the overwhelming emotion and adrenaline that accompany these critical incidents. Whether it's the rush of a first code or the comfort of a supportive healthcare team, understanding how moments of urgency unfold can provide insight into the intense world of nursing. Furthermore, leadership and training play crucial roles in how effectively teams operate during these emergencies. Continuous education and simulation training can enhance response times and decision-making skills, ultimately saving lives. It's essential for healthcare professionals to share their stories and coping strategies, fostering a community that supports each other through these challenging experiences. By discussing perceptions of time and the emotional toll of codes, we can better equip ourselves and our colleagues to handle the pressures of nursing. Members of the nursing community are encouraged to contribute their experiences, creating a richer dialogue about the realities of healthcare and the critical moments that define our profession.
