Why Anxiety & Depression hit autistic + ADHD

1/25 Edited to

... Read moreThrough my personal experience navigating life with both autism and ADHD, I've come to understand just how intertwined our mental health is with physical factors such as gut health and hormones. For instance, a low microbiome diversity can lead to increased inflammation and reduce neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which are crucial in regulating mood and pain. This results in the nervous system being stuck in survival mode, amplifying feelings of anxiety and depression. Moreover, the hormonal fluctuations experienced by many autistic and ADHD women, especially those with conditions like endometriosis, can intensify symptoms. These conditions are inflammatory and influenced by estrogen, often leading to PMDD-like symptoms, chronic pain, and burnout. This isn’t just about mindset; it’s a body-wide experience that demands understanding and support. One significant part of my healing journey has been focusing on sensory-safe, nourishing foods rather than restrictive diets. Simple, soothing eats like cooked soft vegetables, cooled potatoes, eggs, yogurt, and healthy fats like olive oil or butter have helped support my gut diversity over time. This approach nurtures the body without triggering sensory overwhelm. Many of us in the neurodivergent community have had to parent ourselves and become our own advocates, often surviving undiagnosed and unheard. Recognizing that our bodies adapted to survive under stress has been empowering. Rather than feeling broken, learning about these connections has helped me find compassion for my experience and inspired me to share this understanding with others who may also feel unseen.
