🍼 My breastfeeding journey: what I didn’t expect

Becoming a new mom has been beautiful… but also more challenging than I ever imagined.

One of the things I’ve been navigating is breastfeeding with inverted nipples and a tongue tie diagnosis. I won’t lie—it’s been a learning curve.

There were moments I questioned if I was doing something wrong. Moments of frustration, tears, and feeling like my body wasn’t “cooperating” the way I thought it would.

But I’ve learned something really important:

You are not alone, and you are not failing.

Here’s what has helped me along the way:

🍼 Ask for help early — lactation consultants can make a huge difference

🤍 Be patient with yourself and your baby — learning takes time for both of you

🌙 Protect your mental health — feeding decisions should not come with shame

💛 Try different positions/tools if needed — every journey is different

📚 Educate yourself, but don’t overwhelm yourself — balance is everything

🫶🏽 Advocate for your baby — tongue tie support matters and deserves attention

I’m learning that breastfeeding isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, mental, and deeply personal and while it hasn’t been easy, it has been full of growth, patience, and grace I didn’t know I had.

To any mom going through something similar: you are doing better than you think. 💛

💬 What’s one thing that helped you most in your breastfeeding journey?

... Read moreNavigating breastfeeding with conditions like inverted nipples and tongue ties can be daunting, but bringing in a lactation consultant early on truly transformed my experience. They helped me adapt feeding positions and introduced nipple shields, which made latching easier for my baby. Mental health often gets overlooked in breastfeeding discussions. I found that keeping open communication with my partner and connecting with other moms going through similar issues provided emotional relief. It’s important to remind yourself that struggles don’t equal failure and that every small victory is progress. Trying different breastfeeding positions helped me discover what was comfortable for both my baby and me—side-lying and laid-back positions were often the most effective. Additionally, attending support groups expanded my knowledge about tongue tie impact on feeding and allowed me to advocate confidently for my baby's needs. Balancing self-education without getting overwhelmed was key. I selected trusted sources and avoided excessive internet searching, which often added to my anxiety. Staying patient, flexible, and kind to myself made the journey more manageable. For moms facing similar challenges, remember: you are not alone. Every breastfeeding story is unique, and embracing your personal journey with persistence and grace will make a positive difference for you and your baby.
