Best Study Methods by Subject 🎓

Most students use the same study method for every subject that’s why they never see real improvement.

Each subject activates different parts of your brain, so the strategy has to change. Physics needs past papers, chemistry works best with active recall, history is about spaced repetition + quiz testing (I recommend studypet method for that), biology sticks through mind maps, and math requires full focus with brown noise.

If you’ve been studying for hours with no results, this is your sign to switch your method to match the subject instead of forcing one single approach. Your grades aren’t just about working harder, you need to work scientifically smarter.

... Read moreAs students, we've all been there: spending countless hours with our textbooks, only to feel like we're hitting a wall. I certainly was! For too long, I clung to the idea that if I just worked harder, success would follow. But I eventually realized the secret wasn't just about effort; it was about working scientifically smarter by matching my study methods to each unique subject. Take the elaboration study method, for instance. This technique, which involves connecting new information to what you already know and explaining it in your own words, was a game-changer for me. Instead of passively reading through my History notes, I started asking myself, “How does this event relate to previous ones?” or “If I had to teach this concept, how would I simplify it?” This made the information stick so much better than rote memorization, especially for complex historical narratives or philosophical ideas. It truly helps turn abstract facts into meaningful knowledge. For subjects like Physics, the article perfectly recommends past papers, and I couldn't agree more. My personal strategy for Physics exams wasn't just doing past papers, but analyzing them. I'd time myself, mark honestly, and then spend even more time reviewing every single mistake. Why was it wrong? What concept did I misunderstand? This deep dive into my errors, and revisiting the relevant topics, built my problem-solving muscles and confidence for every concept, from mechanics to electromagnetism. Chemistry and active recall are another perfect pair. I found that simply re-reading my chemistry notes did almost nothing for retention. Instead, I'd read a section, close my book, and try to write down or verbally explain everything I remembered about a specific reaction or chemical principle. Flashcards, especially digital ones where I could test myself repeatedly, became my best friend for memorizing formulas, definitions, and reaction types. It's tough at first, but forcing your brain to retrieve information strengthens those neural pathways. When it came to Biology, I embraced mind maps. This visual approach was fantastic for understanding complex biological systems, like the circulatory or nervous system. I'd start with a central concept in the middle of a large sheet of paper and branch out with keywords, small diagrams, and connecting lines. Seeing these connections visually helped me grasp the bigger picture, rather than getting lost in individual facts. It helped me visualize how different components interacted within a larger system. And let's not forget English! While not explicitly mentioned in the original text, a powerful method I discovered for tackling dense literary texts and academic articles was SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review). I'd survey the chapter first, then turn headings into questions. As I read, I'd actively look for answers. After each section, I'd try to recite what I learned before moving on. Finally, a thorough review tied it all together. This structured approach significantly improved my comprehension and retention of complex arguments and literary themes, making essay writing much easier. Finally, for Math, where sheer focus is key, I found that creating a consistent study environment helped me immensely. The article mentions brown noise, and for me, it was a revelation. It’s a low hum that helps block out distractions without being intrusive. Combined with focused practice, it allowed me to delve deep into challenging problems without my mind wandering. It’s about finding that sweet spot where you can concentrate fully. Ultimately, the best study method is the one that works for you and the subject at hand. Don't be afraid to experiment with these techniques, mix and match, and adapt them to your personal learning style. By working smarter, not just harder, you'll find yourself not only seeing better grades but truly understanding and enjoying what you learn.
