Why is my enlistment process so hard this time?😭😭

Last time I enlisted it took literally one month…this time I have been working on enlisting into the Air Force since June and everything keeps on going wrong. Hopefully things start to be better…but knowing my luck it won’t 😭😭

... Read moreMy Air Force enlistment journey at the Salt Lake City Military Entrance Processing Station turned out to be far more challenging than I ever anticipated. After having a relatively smooth process previously, going back for another enlistment, especially since June, has been a rollercoaster of unforeseen hurdles and waiting games. If you’re considering joining the military and your path leads you to a MEPS facility, particularly the one in Salt Lake City, I truly hope sharing my experience and some hard-earned advice can help you navigate what can be a daunting process. One of the biggest lessons I learned is the absolute importance of preparation and patience. When you're dealing with the Military Entrance Processing Station, whether it's for the Air Force or any other branch, things can take time. My first piece of advice is to be meticulously honest and thorough with all your paperwork. Any discrepancy, no matter how small, can lead to significant delays. I found myself facing unexpected questions about past medical records that I thought were minor, which then required additional documentation and follow-ups. Ensure you gather all relevant medical history, school transcripts, and legal documents way ahead of time. Don't assume anything is too insignificant to bring up with your recruiter. Another crucial aspect of the MEPS experience is the medical examination. It’s incredibly comprehensive. Be prepared for a full physical, hearing and vision tests, and a drug screening. Get a good night's sleep before your scheduled visit, stay hydrated, and eat a light, healthy breakfast. The day is long, and you'll need your energy. If you have any pre-existing conditions or injuries, be upfront about them. While it might seem like a barrier, honesty is always the best policy. Waivers are possible, but they add time to the process, which was a major factor in my current prolonged enlistment struggle. I remember seeing other applicants at the Salt Lake City MEPS who were sent home due to incomplete medical information, only adding to their frustration. Beyond the physical and paperwork, mental preparation is key. The MEPS day can involve a lot of waiting. Bring a book or something to occupy your mind, but be ready to put it away quickly when called. The environment is structured and fast-paced, but there are also long periods of downtime. Try to stay calm and focused. The staff at the Salt Lake City MEPS, like any other, are there to process you efficiently, but they handle many individuals, and things can get backed up. Finally, maintain open and consistent communication with your recruiter. They are your primary resource and advocate throughout this journey. If you encounter issues or have questions, don't hesitate to reach out to them. My biggest takeaway from this challenging experience is that persistence pays off. Even when it feels like everything is going wrong or taking forever, keep pushing forward. Your dream of joining the Air Force is worth the effort, even if the path through the Salt Lake City MEPS is unexpectedly tough. I'm still working through my process, but I hope sharing these lessons from my own journey helps ease yours!

Why You Avoid Hard Feelings
Avoidance is not laziness. It is protection. Most people do not avoid painful emotions because they are weak, dramatic, or “bad at healing.” They avoid them because somewhere along the way their nervous system learned: Feeling this might break me. So you stay busy. You numb out. You ov
