Unpopular Opinion 🫶
“Sure, no problem!” I’d say with a smile…
While quietly panicking inside.
We were barely scraping by, but I’d still grab the $5 toy at checkout , just trying to give my kids something. Trying to feel like a “good mom.”
But eventually I realized…
They didn’t need the toy.
They needed me. Present, grounded, and not buried under guilt or clutter.
Now I say,
🗣️ “We’re not buying anything today. We have a budget, we have goals - and we’re saving for something better.”
Sometimes it’s a camping trip.
Sometimes it’s our next family cruise. Or it’s just regular bills and expenses.
But the point is - they know the goals. And they agree with them.
They’ve learned to hear no - and not take it as rejection.
Because we’ve made it part of our family culture.
Even when I feel tempted - by something like a cute $10.99 mug - I’ll say out loud:
“This is super cute… but it’s not aligned with the goals I have for myself or our family’s legacy.”
Then I respectfully put it back, walk away, and let that be enough.
If it still matters tomorrow, I can come back. But usually, it doesn’t.
Saying no isn’t about deprivation.
It’s about direction.
And I want my kids to see what it looks like to choose peace, purpose, and legacy - over impulse.
Don’t go broke trying to earn love. Live loved instead.
