What is this????

... Read moreFinding a mysterious object at a thrift store is honestly half the fun of thrifting, right? It’s like a treasure hunt where sometimes the treasure is just a really puzzling gadget! I know that feeling all too well when you pick something up, turn it every which way, and still have absolutely no clue what it’s for. My recent find, that 'Wabi' appliance I posted about, is a perfect example – it looks like it could be a portable induction cooktop, but I'm still trying to confirm! But don't worry, you're not alone! Over time, I've picked up a few tricks that often help me crack the code of these unknown thrift store finds. Here’s my go-to strategy for identifying those perplexing items: First, look for any identifying marks. This is crucial! Check for brand names, model numbers, patent numbers, or even obscure symbols. Just like with my 'Wabi' find, a brand name is a huge starting point. Sometimes, even if the brand isn't well-known, typing it directly into Google alongside any descriptive words can yield surprising results. Next, examine its features and materials closely. What does it look like? What is it made of? Does it have buttons, plugs, compartments, or moving parts? For instance, if you see a large and small circular black surface on an appliance, like the one in my picture, your mind might immediately jump to 'cooktop' or 'burner.' If it’s wood, consider if it's a decorative item, a tool, or part of a larger piece of furniture. The more details you can observe, the better your search terms will be. Then, it’s time for some internet sleuthing! My favorite tool is Google Images reverse search. Just snap a clear picture of the item, upload it, and see what the internet suggests. Sometimes, it’s spot on! If that doesn't work, try specific keyword searches. Combine the brand name with your observations. For example, 'Wabi induction cooktop' or 'vintage appliance circular heating element.' Don't be afraid to try different combinations of words. Don't forget specialized forums and online communities! There are so many groups on Facebook, Reddit (like r/whatisthisthing), and other platforms dedicated to identifying mystery objects. People in these communities are often incredibly knowledgeable and love a good puzzle. Just post clear photos and provide as much detail as you can. You'd be amazed at how quickly someone can identify an item you've been pondering for days! Finally, consider its context. What was it near in the thrift store? Sometimes, items are grouped by category (kitchenware, tools, decor), which can give you a hint. Also, think about its age. Does it look vintage, antique, or relatively modern? This can help narrow down your search. It's a journey of discovery, and sometimes the hunt for information is just as rewarding as knowing what the item actually is. So, next time you find a mysterious item, put on your detective hat and see what you can uncover!
