realistic summer with a newborn!

i gave birth to my first daughter in the middle of May. in May of 2023 Houston had a really bad heatwave. but i feel like regardless of the heatwave, i still wanted to stay inside with my newborn! she would get heat rashes and i just didn’t want her to overheat in anyway. so we aimed to get out of the house LATE in the evening.

1. i kept my baby cool

i dressed her appropriately, and took a fan with us EVERYWHERE. i was constantly checking for overheating! (placing your hand on their chest and neck)

2. avoiding direct sunlight

babies under 6 months cannot use sunscreen so it’s best to keep them in the shade. when i didn’t have shade i used a light muslin blanket!

3. hydrated my baby

no newborns cannot have water 😅 frequent feedings may be key! listen to your baby, when they’re hungry and your outside, let them eat to keep them hydrated!

4. preventing rashes

i used the Aquaphor healing stick for babies! another great alternative for this is the AOO cream from Tubby Todd! also keeping baby dry with frequent changes, clothes and diapers, is a MUST!

5. cooling the car

we always turned the car on before putting baby in to make sure it was cool. instead of HOT. our car has remote start/ in app start so we made sure to turn it on all the time.

6. skip packed places

we tried to avoid packed places as much as possible. if it was loaded with people, i was not gonna be there 🤣

... Read moreNavigating summer with a newborn can be quite challenging, especially in extreme heat conditions like those experienced in Houston in May 2023. It's crucial to prioritize your baby's comfort and safety during these months. Here are some key strategies: 1. **Staying Indoors**: Limit outdoor activities to the cooler parts of the day, such as late evenings, to avoid intense heat. 2. **Dress Appropriately**: Choose lightweight, breathable clothing for your baby. Natural fabrics like cotton can help keep them cool. 3. **Hydration**: While newborns cannot have water, ensure they are frequently fed to stay hydrated. Pay attention to their hunger cues, especially when you're outside. 4. **Protecting Skin**: Babies under six months cannot use sunscreen. Instead, keep them in the shade or use lightweight muslin blankets to shield them from direct sunlight. 5. **Managing Car Temperatures**: Always ensure your vehicle is cool before placing your baby inside. Using remote start technology can make this process easier. 6. **Avoid Crowds**: Stay away from busy places where increased temperatures and germs could pose risks. By implementing these measures, parents can ensure that both they and their little ones can safely enjoy the summer!
