how to get your baby to sit independently

this is such a fun milestone! after they sit, they start taking off 🥲💔

here are some things we did to get our girls to sit on their own! we did these daily.

tummy time: place baby on their tummy several times a day to strengthen their neck, shoulders, and core.

supported sitting: prop baby on your lap or in a V shape between your legs with your hands lightly supporting their torso.

pull-to-sit: gently pull your baby up by their arms from lying to sitting. it strengthens neck and core control. and my favorite one to do! 😂

boppy pillow and floor sitting: the boppy will help them support their hips so they’re not flopping everywhere. but sitting them on the floor helps their hips more than packing them on a seat. they will end up relying on the seat.

‼️ once they’ve mastered sitting, you can start giving them toys to keep them up for longer periods. place it out of reach, to opposite sides, or even roll a ball to them!

... Read moreAchieving the milestone of sitting independently is an exciting phase in your baby's development, typically occurring around 6 to 8 months of age. However, it's important to remember that some babies may sit later, and that’s perfectly okay—they need time to build their core strength, balance, and coordination. One key factor to focus on is strengthening your baby’s core muscles, which are essential for maintaining an upright posture on their own. Tummy time plays a major role here by building up the neck, shoulder, and core muscles gradually. Aim for multiple tummy time sessions daily, starting with brief periods and increasing them as your baby becomes more comfortable. Supported sitting helps your baby gain confidence and practice balancing. You can prop your baby in a V shape on your lap or between your legs with gentle support on their torso, allowing them to experience sitting while you are ready to catch any falls. Additionally, the pull-to-sit technique encourages neck and core control by gently pulling your baby from lying down to a sitting position, promoting muscle engagement. When it comes to equipment, a boppy pillow can provide valuable hip support and prevent your baby from flopping sideways. However, it’s equally important to spend time having your baby sit on the floor without too much support. Floor sitting encourages natural hip development and prevents overdependence on seats or cushions. Once your baby masters sitting, you can encourage longer sitting periods by offering toys placed just out of their reach or rolling a ball to them. This not only keeps them entertained but also motivates them to strengthen their balance and reach, further developing coordination. Remember, every baby develops at their own pace. If your little one isn’t sitting up just yet, don’t worry. Keep practicing these supportive exercises regularly, and consult your pediatrician if you have any concerns regarding your baby’s physical milestones. With daily encouragement and safe practice, your baby will enjoy this fun and important stage of growth.
