The One Habit That Got Me Promoted at work

The One Habit That Got Me Promoted: From Front Desk to Outreach

If you had told me a year ago that I’d be working in healthcare outreach – planning events and representing my organization out in the community – I’m not sure I would’ve believed you. But here I am, and it all started with one habit:

Saying yes to volunteering.

Back when I was working the front desk, I started raising my hand to help at events. Farmers markets, community tabling, baby fairs – even the smaller ones that meant early mornings, late afternoons, and a lot of hauling supplies. I didn’t do it for recognition. I just genuinely loved connecting with people and supporting the mission of accessible healthcare.

Over time, those small “yeses” added up. I got more confident talking to the public, learned what goes into successful outreach, and showed I was dependable and passionate about the work.

So when the Outreach Coordinator position opened up, I didn’t even need to apply. The person leaving the role named me as their recommendation – because they had seen me show up, step in, and do the work.

Here’s the truth: If I hadn’t volunteered, I wouldn’t have even been considered.

The lesson – don’t wait to be “qualified.” Show up. Get involved. Let people see what you’re capable of. Your effort is being noticed, even if it doesn’t feel like it right away.

Big things often start with small steps – and a blue wagon full of supplies. 💙
