Easy 4-Ingredient Irish Soda Bread 🍞
ve been wanting to try Irish soda bread, so I went with the easiest version I could find that still felt authentic.
It came together super quick… no yeast, no waiting. Just mix, shape, and bake.
Texture-wise, this leans more like a biscuit than a traditional soft bread. Slightly dense, a little crumbly, and best served warm.
If I’m being honest, the base recipe is a little on the bland side for my taste… but it’s a great starting point.
Here are a few ways I’d level it up next time:
• Fold in chocolate chips after kneading
• Add a little sugar for a sweeter version
• Or make a honey butter to spread on top (this would be so good)
To me, this feels more like a breakfast bread than something you’d serve with dinner.
What you’ll need:
◽️ 4 cups (580g) all-purpose flour
◽️ 1½ teaspoons baking soda
◽️ 1 teaspoon salt
◽️ 2 cups (470ml) cold buttermilk
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 400°F and line or grease your pan.
2. In a bowl, whisk together 4 cups flour, 1½ tsp baking soda, and 1 tsp salt.
3. Stir in 2 cups buttermilk until the dough becomes too thick to mix.
4. Transfer to a floured surface and knead lightly 5–10 times.
5. Shape into a round loaf and place in your pan.
6. Cut a deep “X” into the top.
7. Bake for 45–50 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
