Yoga is just Stretching?!
Yoga vs Stretching: What's the Difference? | Kevin Dewayne Hughes, Yoga Pravena
It can be hard to tell the difference between stretching and yoga because in the West, just one branch of Yoga is practiced. However, the physical exercise of Yoga is distinguished from stretching in the Pranayama (breath) and the flow of Prana (Qi energy). Without the internal energy control and regulation, Yoga becomes nothing more than fancy stretches and calisthenics.
In my Yoga, we hold each pose for a minimum of five breath cycles to focus on aligning the body structure so that we can increase the efficiency of energy flow and/or storage within the structure of the pose. We can flow from pose to pose, but in my system, a yoga sequence becomes a flow with one breath cycle at each pose before moving to the next.

Ponder this: How do you think posture affects energy flow?
From my personal experience practicing yoga as taught in the Tenkidokan School of Energy Arts, I can say that understanding the role of breath and energy flow transformed my practice completely. Unlike typical stretching, where movements are often rushed or just aimed at loosening muscles, here we pay deep attention to Pranayama — the controlled breathing technique that connects breath with movement. Holding poses for at least five breath cycles allows you to not only stretch the muscles but also align your body's internal energy pathways, which is vital for overall wellness. One of the most profound realizations I had was how posture affects the flow of Prana, or Qi energy, through the body. Improper posture can block energy flow, leading to stiffness or fatigue, while correct alignment in yoga poses enhances vitality and mental clarity. This is why yoga practitioners emphasize mindful positioning and breath synchronization. Additionally, transitioning between poses with one breath cycle promotes a meditative, flowing sequence rather than isolated stretches. This flow helps maintain energy momentum and keeps the mind engaged, differentiating yoga significantly from conventional calisthenics. Through consistent practice integrating breath, posture, and energy flow, yoga becomes a holistic discipline benefiting not just the body but also mind and spirit.
