I Was So NERVOUS!!

If you told 10 year old Kenna that she would be giving an animal science research presentation in grad school, she would have thought you were crazy. Being in a masters program was never on my radar until the past two years, and here I am. It’s taken a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and rejection but it’s also been one of the most rewarding experiences.

Yesterday, I gave my first grad school presentation. I was shaking, sweating, and downright a big ol’ ball of anxiety! However, once I started, it was like second nature. My confidence came in a huge wave and I could feel the support from my peers and advisors. I am so blessed to be where I am today. I am surrounded by the most amazing peers, advisors, and family. I cannot wait for what these next few years will bring!

... Read moreIt's totally normal to feel a huge wave of nervousness when facing a big 'first,' whether it's your first major research presentation, like mine, or even something like a new job, an important interview, or your first day at a new university. I remember getting to the venue super early, doing those last-minute touch-ups, and feeling my heart pound. It felt just like that 'first day of work nervous' feeling, even though it was a presentation. My personal journey taught me that while the anxiety can feel overwhelming, there are ways to embrace it and even use it to your advantage. For me, connecting with my material and knowing my research inside out was key. But beyond the preparation, it's also about managing those physical symptoms – the shaking, the sweating. I found that taking a few deep, calming breaths right before I started really helped ground me. It's like telling your body, 'Okay, we've got this.' Another huge factor was the support from my peers and advisors. Knowing they were there, cheering me on silently, made a world of difference. Don't underestimate the power of your support system! Whether it's friends, family, or mentors, having someone to talk to beforehand or even just a friendly face in the audience can help ease some of that pressure. If you're facing a similar situation, here are a few things I learned that might help: Prepare, then practice: Know your stuff, but don't just memorize. Understand it. Practice out loud, maybe even record yourself. This builds confidence. Deep breathing: Seriously, it works wonders. A few slow, deep breaths can calm your nervous system. Positive self-talk: Instead of 'I'm going to mess this up,' try 'I've prepared for this, and I can do it.' Connect with your audience: Look for friendly faces. Remember, they want you to succeed. Embrace the jitters: A little nervousness can sharpen your focus. Don't fight it; acknowledge it and let it propel you. Allow for 'last minute touch ups': Give yourself time before the event to review notes, relax, and make any final adjustments. The feeling of accomplishment after pushing through that initial nervousness is incredibly rewarding. It’s a huge step in building resilience and confidence, not just for one presentation, but for all the challenges ahead. Remember, every expert was once a beginner, and every 'first' is an opportunity to grow.
