For a long time, I struggled to maintain my health, but I eventually figured out a system that allowed me to lose a significant amount of weight—over 30 pounds, in fact, and eventually 50 pounds!—and keep it off while living the truck driver lifestyle. My biggest revelation came down to two things: smarter eating and more movement. Remember how I mentioned those mustard sardines? They might sound a little extreme or disgusting at first, but trust me, they became a protein-packed lifesaver for me! Along with fresh fruit like tangerines, they provided good, quick nutrition without all the junk. The key is meal prepping. I started packing healthy options like grilled chicken salads (but always remember my rule: never eat smelly chicken in your truck – that smell will linger!). Hard-boiled eggs, pre-cut veggies, and whole-wheat wraps with lean protein became my go-to. Hydration is also crucial; I carry a large water bottle and sometimes opt for a low-calorie juicy juice with no sugar added when I’m getting tired of plain water. Then there's the movement. We truck drivers sit for 10 hours, even longer sometimes, so we have to intentionally seek out opportunities to move. My number one tip is to get out of your truck and walk as long as possible at every single stop. It doesn't have to be a marathon; even 10-15 minutes of brisk walking around the truck stop or parking lot adds up significantly over the day. I found that parking a little further away from the diner or the store forced me to get those extra steps in. Your truck can also be your gym! Simple bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, or push-ups against the trailer can be done in minutes. I've even incorporated stretching routines to combat stiffness from sitting. The goal is simply to activate your muscles and break up those long periods of inactivity. Another small but mighty tip: keep your environment clean. As I mentioned, do not throw trash in your truck, especially food waste. You don't want it to smell like a fish market! A clean space helps with a clear mind and can reduce the temptation to snack mindlessly. Losing weight on the road is a journey, not a sprint. There will be days when you're tired, or the healthy option isn't available. Don't beat yourself up. Just get back on track with your next meal or your next stop. Small, consistent changes truly make all the difference. You can do this!
