What makes a good teacher

2025/9/10 Edited to

... Read moreAs an educator, I often reflect on what truly makes a teacher not just good, but *excellent*. It's a question I've pondered throughout my journey, and from my personal experience, it goes beyond textbooks and lesson plans. It’s about being a complete person who genuinely invests in the growth of their students and themselves. Here are my top 7 essential qualities I believe define an excellent teacher: A Lifelong Learner: Just like the images highlighted, the best teachers are always students themselves. We must constantly seek good in information, stay curious, and be open to new knowledge and methodologies. If we stop learning, how can we inspire our students to continue to learn for the rest of their lives? Embraces & Welcomes Change: The educational landscape is constantly evolving. A truly excellent teacher doesn't just adapt to change but actively seeks it out, looking for new ways to be better. Whether it's integrating new technology or refining teaching strategies, welcoming change keeps us fresh and effective. Cultivates a Positive Attitude: A positive attitude is infectious! It shapes the classroom environment and significantly impacts student engagement. Even on challenging days, approaching situations with optimism helps students feel safe, encouraged, and ready to tackle learning. This doesn't mean ignoring difficulties, but rather facing them with a solution-oriented mindset. Inspirational & Encouraging: An excellent teacher knows how to light a spark. They encourage students to want to learn, not just for a grade, but for the sheer joy of discovery. It’s about fostering a love for knowledge and empowering students to believe in their own capabilities. Empathetic & Understanding: To truly reach students, we must understand their world. Seeking good in people means recognizing their struggles, celebrating their successes, and providing support when they need it most. Empathy builds trust and creates a supportive learning community. Adaptable & Creative: Every classroom is unique, and every student learns differently. Excellent teachers are flexible, ready to adjust their approaches, and come up with creative solutions to engage diverse learners. This helps us grow smarter and smarter every day, finding innovative ways to present material. Passionate & Dedicated: Your passion for your subject and for teaching itself is palpable. When you love what you do, it shines through, making learning exciting for everyone. This dedication translates into going the extra mile to ensure students gain wisdom and achieve their full potential. For those of you aspiring students who want to follow in these footsteps and embark on an educational journey, here's some advice I wish I had known earlier: Never Stop Learning: This echoes the first quality, but it's worth reiterating. Attend workshops, read educational journals, connect with other educators, and even learn from your students! The world of education is dynamic, and staying current is key. Build Meaningful Relationships: Connect with your students, their families, and your colleagues. A strong support network makes all the difference. Remember, teaching is a human endeavor, and relationships are at its core. Seek Mentorship and Feedback: Find experienced teachers you admire and ask them for guidance. Be open to constructive criticism; it’s how we grow smarter and gain wisdom. Nobody becomes excellent in isolation. Develop Resilience: There will be challenging days, moments of doubt, and unexpected hurdles. Learning to bounce back, maintain your positive attitude, and remember your 'why' is crucial for longevity and effectiveness in this profession. Find Your Unique Voice: While you’ll learn from others, develop your own teaching style that feels authentic to you. What makes you unique can be your greatest asset in connecting with students. Ultimately, becoming an excellent teacher is a continuous journey of self-improvement and dedication to your students. It's about striving to be better each day, welcoming challenges, and always keeping that desire to foster a love of learning alive.

The first slide introduces the topic: 'Yelling at Kids Works — But at a Cost,' promising the honest truth about its short-term and long-term effects, based on science, with a 'SAVE THIS POST!' call to action.
The second slide explains 'WHY IT WORKS,' stating that yelling triggers a child's threat response, leading to compliance. This immediate result is a powerful reward, teaching the brain 'yelling = compliance,' making it hard to stop.
The third slide details 'THE REAL COSTS' of yelling in the long run: it erodes relationships, raises the threshold for compliance, keeps children's nervous systems on alert, and models yelling as a tool.
Yelling works — but here’s what it costs 🗣️
Can I say the thing nobody wants to say out loud? Yelling works. That’s why we do it. The kids stop. They comply. And our brain registers: that worked. So the next time we’re maxed out and nothing else is landing, our brain goes right back there. But here’s what it’s costing over time. And i
