My Journey with Psoriasis

Those who have psoriasis understand how it can affect your mental state and can leave you feeling insecure about your body image.

At 34 years old I am experiencing the worst flares up I have had since I was 17. After large amounts of research and trying different products, I know diet and stress plays a major factor. If you know me, you know I am a STRESS BALL 😅

I have started working on my diet and exercise to help with my flare ups but I am continuing to try new products to see what works best for me.

I decided to share my struggles with all of you in hopes to help those who deal with this too. Psoriasis is a part of my journey, but it doesn’t define who I am. So here is to embracing the ups, the downs, and everything in between 🤍

... Read moreNavigating life with psoriasis is a constant learning curve, and believe me, I understand the frustration and the relentless search for anything that offers relief. My recent flare-ups have been a stark reminder of how deeply this condition impacts not just my skin, but my entire well-being. It's more than just a rash; it's a daily challenge that requires a holistic approach, and I've been diving deep into what really works for me, especially when it comes to those specific, stubborn areas. One of the biggest lessons I've learned is the importance of a truly effective moisturizer. I've gone through countless tubes and tubs, looking for that perfect 'deep moisturizing ointment.' While I haven't personally tried every single brand out there, I know many in the psoriasis community swear by products like Psoriasin for their soothing and hydrating properties. For me, it's about finding something rich enough to penetrate those thick patches, but also gentle enough not to irritate my already sensitive skin. Consistency is absolutely key – applying it multiple times a day, especially after showering, has made a noticeable difference in softening scales and reducing the dreaded itch that leads to... well, let's talk about that. Scalp psoriasis is a beast of its own. I've definitely experienced the agony of a 'bleeding scalp from scratching.' The itching can be maddening, and it's so easy to accidentally scratch too hard, leading to raw skin and even tiny spots of blood. It’s incredibly discouraging. To combat this, I've found that gentle, medicated shampoos designed for psoriasis can help, but it's also about managing the impulse to scratch. I try to apply cool compresses when the itch is unbearable or use a light, non-comedogenic oil (like jojoba or a very small amount of olive oil) to gently loosen scales before washing. It’s a delicate balance to soothe without causing more irritation. Another confusing aspect, especially in the early stages or when a new patch appears, is trying to figure out if it's 'eczema early stage psoriasis rash' or something else entirely. I've spent hours examining my skin, wondering, 'Is this a new psoriasis spot, or could it be eczema?' From my experience and what I've learned, psoriasis patches tend to be more defined, often with a silvery-white scale on top of very red, inflamed skin. Eczema, on the other hand, can sometimes look more red, weepy, or bumpy, and the itch can be just as intense, but often lacks that characteristic thick, silvery scale. It’s always best to consult a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis, but learning to recognize the nuances of your own skin is empowering. And then there are those incredibly tricky spots, like 'home treatment for psoriasis in ears.' Ouch! The ears are so sensitive and hard to reach, making treatment a real challenge. I've found that keeping the area meticulously clean and dry is fundamental. For home remedies, I've tried applying a tiny, tiny amount of a very mild, fragrance-free moisturizer or even a dab of aloe vera gel with a clean cotton swab – being incredibly careful not to push anything into the ear canal. Sometimes, a warm, damp cloth can help soften scales before a gentle clean. The goal is to reduce inflammation and gently remove scales without causing further trauma. It's about being persistent and patient, trying different things until you find what brings you a little peace. Remember, you're not alone in this journey, and every small step toward understanding and managing your psoriasis is a victory.
