my visit to the Eurasian Community House (part 1)

Though I am a born and bred Singaporean Eurasian, I have never set foot into the Eurasian Association building before.

I was in the Joo Chiat area and had a couple hours to spare, so I dropped by.

... Read moreVisiting the Eurasian Community House opened my eyes to the deep roots and cultural richness of the Eurasian community in Singapore. One fascinating aspect I learned about was Kampong Serani, also known as the Dutch Quarters. This historical kampong housed Eurasian families after World War II and fostered a strong sense of neighbourliness and shared passion for sports — a glimpse into how communal life thrived. The rent back then was only $20 a month, and though modern life has changed much since, the spirit of community remains alive in spaces like the Eurasian Heritage Gallery. Seeing how the association celebrates these traditions makes me appreciate the blend of cultures that defines us. For those interested in personal care stories within the Eurasian community, or the work of Eurasian young professionals, the community house is a hub where these connections flourish beyond cultural events. The building is more than a historical site; it's a living centre fostering cultural identities and supporting members with initiatives that promote health, heritage, and professional growth. If you’re curious about the heritage of Eurasians in Singapore — their models, cultural practices, language nuances, and contributions — a visit to the Eurasian House offers meaningful insights that bring history to life. It’s a heartfelt journey worth taking for anyone wanting to understand the unique blend that makes up Singapore’s multicultural tapestry.

Eurasians in Singapore are a small but influential ethnic group with mixed European and Asian ancestry, arriving as early as the 19th century. Their European heritage primarily comes from Portuguese, Dutch, and British settlers, while the Asian component is usually Chinese, Malay, or Indian.
